3/4 Learning Community

Welcome to our last Newsletter for the Semester!
A big thank you to all our 3/4 Families for donating and volunteering to our recent Friday Food Stalls. Altogether our learning community raised a whopping $1,155.10!!! These events wouldn't happen without all your support - we are so grateful!
We are looking forward to being able to share all our learning with our parent community on Thursday next week. Details will be sent out as to when and where.
Literacy:
In Literacy we have been learning about poetry. We have done 2 poems, one called 'The Eagle' by Alfred Tennyson and the other called 'Have You Seen the Wind?' by Christina Rosetti. We learned about parts of a poem, like the stanza, rhyming words, lines and syllable patterns. We also included some figurative language like similies, alliteration, idioms and personification. We even had to put together poems in groups that we realised were about our teachers! They were so funny! We have prepared a book review of Uncle Xbox AND created our own front covers based on what was memorable of the book.
We have also been practising our speaking and listening skills, and our publishing, getting ready for our big expo! We have practised doing independent reading for 15-20 minutes, we get to choose our books and practise our strategies.
Maths:
We have been learning about 2D shapes, how to classify them and how to make tangrams! We also did symmetry of shapes and how to identify it in our own lives. We have started our addition and subtraction unit and focused on the split strategy, the compensation strategy and we are about to do vertical algorithm with and without regrouping. We had so much fun with the tangrams and making animals from them!
Inquiry:
In Inquiry we have been researching and writing a biography in partners about a famous indigenous person. We published our writing with inspiration from the book series
'Little People, Big Dreams' and we are so proud of how they have turned out. We learned that these indigenous people have had to face many challenges to get to where they are today and who are even some historical people who have paved the ways for others. We had a great day for our incursion. We used a stone block to grind down 3 different rocks and added water to make our paint. We then used indigenous inspired symbols and designs to decorate our own boomerangs. We were so grateful to Ronin who came to share his culture and practices with us.
Wellbeing:
We have been focusing on our gratitude boardgames. We got together in small groups and designed a boardgame that would have a positive gratitude theme. We recycled cardboard from our school recycle bins and got to work! It was so fun to come up with the rules and how the game is played with the figurines and the gratitude cards. We had to pick 10 gratitude questions or prompts to keep the game focused. We are hoping to share these with the 1/2 or 5/6 Learning communities in week 11!
Recent Assembly Awards:
Congratulations to the students who received Gleam Awards at our most recent Assembly. Also a HUGE thank you and congratulations to our Community Captains - Manreet, Jacob, Catie and Alice who have fulfilled their duties for their roles this Semester. We will be opening applications for the next Semester's Community Captains and the various other leadership roles. These applications will be prepared in class and handed in in the last week of Term 2. The leadership roles will be announced early in Term 3.
Have a great mid-year break and stay warm!
