Year 1/2 Learning Community News

We’ve had a fantastic few weeks in the 1/2 Community, with lots of exciting learning happening across all areas!
In maths, we have wrapped up our unit on addition and subtraction and have now moved into patterns. Students are exploring patterns using shapes, objects, numbers, and symbols. We’re learning how patterns can increase, decrease, and follow repeated sequences like AB, AAB, and ABB. As part of this unit, students have also been creating their own pattern animals using shape and number patterns.
In reading, Grade 1s have been learning about the split digraph, also known as the "bossy e." The students learnt a fun Bossy E Rap to help them remember how it changes vowel sounds. We’ve also been practising our tricky words like because, where, and were, and building our sentence skills by unjumbling mixed-up sentences.
Grade 2 students have been learning to ask thoughtful questions before and during reading to help build a deeper understanding of the text. We’ve been practising using question words such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to help us make meaning from what we read.
In inquiry and writing, students have been preparing and delivering debate-style presentations, convincing others why their chosen country is the best to visit. We've been working on speaking clearly, using eye contact, and incorporating props like our postcards to strengthen our arguments.
In library sessions, students have read Katy and the Waterlily Pond and learnt how to draw using soft strokes and colour blending like Claude Monet.
