Literacy and Numeracy

Year 2 Maths News
This term in Maths, our Year 2s have been working on building confidence with number facts to 20. They’ve been learning to break numbers into parts (partitioning) to help them understand how addition and subtraction are linked — for example, knowing that 8 + 7 = 15 helps them figure out that 15 − 7 = 8.
We’ve also been practising doubling and halving numbers using hands-on activities and fun games. This helps students get ready for learning multiplication and division, especially with twos. The children are really enjoying using different tools and strategies to become quick and confident with their number facts!
Check out what some of our Year 2s said
- "I used my blocks to break 15 into 8 and 7. It helped me do takeaways!"
- "Doubling is fun! I know that double 6 is 12 because double 5 is 10, and I just added 2 more."
- "When we play the dice game, I like choosing to double the number to get closer to the target!"
- "I can use my number facts to work backwards. If 9 + 6 is 15, then 15 − 6 is 9!"
"Halving is like sharing! If I have 10 counters, I can give 5 to my friend and 5 to me."
