Team Spirit is Our Competitive Edge
CGSAV AFL
In windy and cold conditions, all teams played well across all games. There were some excellent skills from the girls as well as teamwork and team spirit. At the conclusion of the rounds, the Senior team finished fourth overall, the Intermediate team made the Grand Final but were unfortunately defeated, and the Junior team also made the Grand Final but came away runners up.
Despite the final scores it was great to see the experienced players supporting those new to AFL.
CGSAV BADMINTON
Another positive day out with all girls demonstrating excellent team spirit during all games.
Our senior team made the Grand Fi nal but unfortunately came home with second place. Despite the loss, Olivia H was named as best grand final player.
The intermediate team finished in third place at the conclusion of all their games.
The junior team were able to bring home a trophy for their win in the grand final and the best player was awarded to Kimi P.
CGSAV FUTSAL
Junior (coach Mr Odachowski)
The Juniors put together a World Cup worthy performance in claiming the Junior title after a magnificent run to the final. In the round robin phase, the team needed to win their final game, and after a 2-0 deficit, they fired in the second half to win 4-3 and make the finals. The semi-final, a gritty 1-0 win against Santa Maria College was fuelled by a very disciplined performance, a mantra that had been followed all day.
In the Grand Final, Academy set the tone right from kick-off with Sophie F scoring four unanswered goals in the first 5 minutes of the final, before the team worked hard in holding off an OLSH College onslaught to claim a glorious 5-3 victory. Sophie F claimed the ‘Most Valuable Player’ in the final; however, every player in the squad should be commended for their contribution to such a wonderful result!
Intermediate (coach Mr Molony)
Inters played some courageous futsal in the first division. Nobody said it was going to be easy, but the Academy girls acquitted themselves very well. All played determined futsal, giving no quarter to the opposition and repeatedly putting themselves on the line in contested situations. Eleni K showed some genuine class while Olivia N and Angela M held the side together serving both in goals and in attack. Olivia, Angela and Eleni shared the points for player of the series. Ava V played courageously under duress and Madi D defended admirably all day. We missed the finals by a point, which was probably more the coach’s fault than anyone else, but the Academy girls can walk away with a sense of pride in all their play throughout the day.
Senior (coach Mr Mercieca)
Our Senior futsal team was outstanding at MSAC on Tuesday, 21 July. Our team played six games in the qualifying rounds, and we were off to a flying start with two wins. The level of competition became more difficult as the day wore on. After our sixth game and having accumulated seven points, we were one of four teams to qualify for the Semi Finals. Despite leading by a goal in the first half, we succumbed to a little bit of fatigue and eventually lost 2-1. The team that vanquished us in the semi final went on to win the final. A great result overall considering we are playing in Division 1, and our team was made up entirely of Yr 11 students who are keen on redemption in 2027! Best players - Olivia M, Carla F and Ivana M
