A Sweet Spot of Routine and Relationship

I don’t know how other parents are feeling, but the school break seemed to pass me by in a heartbeat. While holidays are a gift, there is something quite special about the return to routine that comes with a new school term.

During the break, I treasured the slower pace—no early morning rush, no checking bags for homework, no reminders about what was due the next day. Like many families, our days were a little looser and our mornings much quieter. Teenagers, in particular, seem to embrace the gift of sleep during the holidays! There were mornings when I found myself up early, enjoying a quiet house, before they eventually appeared—ready to consume the entire contents of the pantry!

As this term has begun, however, I’ve been reminded of the quiet blessings found in routine. Our mornings now begin together again—shared breakfasts, cheerful good mornings, and simple conversations before the day unfolds. These moments aren’t grand or perfectly planned, but they are meaningful. They remind me that routines are not just about structure; they are about creating space for connection.

At home and at school, routines help children feel safe, known and ready to learn. They provide a rhythm to our days that supports growth—academically, socially and spiritually. In the Bible, we are reminded that “there is a time for everything” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Holidays give us rest and renewal, while school terms invite us back into purposeful learning and shared life.

Please don’t worry if your mornings don’t sound as calm as mine right now—things are certainly perfect in our home! But right now, we seem to be in a bit of a sweet spot. And I’m grateful for it.

As we step into this new term together, may we value both the routines that ground us and the relationships that enrich us. May our days be filled with learning, kindness, and moments of joy—both big and small.
