STEM CAPTAINS

I would like to introduce our 2026 STEM Captains - Minh and Amelia. Minh and Amelia will be responsible for assisting in the organisation and promotion of STEM activities within the school for 2026. 

SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH

The Science Talent Search is a highly successful state-wide science competition. It is based around Victorian Curriculum principles, encouraging students to pursue creative, open-ended projects and hone their science inquiry skills. In 2025, RGLPS had 20 students participate, with 11 of these students being recipients of a bursary award. We invite all students from Grade 1 to 6 to participate in the Science Talent Search if they are interested. I will publish more information as it becomes available.

Prep - In Term One, students are focusing on biological sciences - the study of living things. This week, they learned what makes something living - moves, grows, reproduces. Students identified items that are living and items that are not living.

Year 1/2s - In Term One, students are focusing on Earth and space sciences. This week, they learned about the planets in our solar system. Students named the 8 planets and identified their order from the sun (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune). They were introduced to the mnemonic My Vicious Elephant Made Jumbo Sandwiches Using Nutella! to help them remember the planet order.

Year 3/4s - In Term One, students are focusing on Earth and space sciences. They are focusing on how water is important to Earth. This week, students learned about freshwater. They explained the difference between saltwater and freshwater, and created a pie chart to represent the percentages of both on Earth. Students also identified different sources of freshwater on Earth.

Year 5/6s - In Term One, students are focusing on Earth and space sciences. They are focusing on how Earth fits and interacts with our Solar System. This week, students were learning to communicate their current understanding about the Earth and space. They worked in small groups to investigate historical claims about how the Earth, sun and moon moved together, and used their own knowledge to analyse each claim.

We will be running two sessions - one at 3:45pm and one at 5pm in the Performing Arts room.
