Learning e-News

Next week, we will resume the WPS Learning e-News. This will be published for each classroom and our Specialists Team. This is a wonderful way for us to celebrate the learning that takes place around the school.  This is also a very personal way to share a link with you that will only be accessible to the families in your class.  The 'link' will be sent via Compass and updated regularly with photos that we want to share. More details will be shared next week.

AUSLAN

We are so excited that AUSLAN is our new language provision at WPS!

Why Learning AUSLAN is Great for  WPS Students

Learning AUSLAN, Australia’s sign language. It provides our students more than just a new way to communicate. It helps them connect with Deaf and hard-of-hearing peers, building inclusion, empathy and understanding.

AUSLAN also boosts brain skills like memory, attention, and visual awareness, while encouraging creativity through gestures and expression. Students gain a deeper appreciation of Deaf culture and develop empathy and respect for diversity. In addition to knowing AUSLAN opens doors to future opportunities in education, healthcare, community work, and beyond, it gives our students a skill that’s both meaningful and fun!

NAPLAN

NAPLAN is a national assessment for students in Years 3, 5, (7 & 9). It measures skills in Reading, Writing and Numeracy. The test provides a snapshot of how your child is progressing against National Standards. It is just one part of our overall assessment process and does not replace teacher judgment or classroom assessments. Put simply, it is a single test taken at a point in time and does not define your child academically.

Which Tests are online?

Students complete NAPLAN online, except for Year 3 writing, which is done on paper. The online tests are adaptive, meaning the questions adjust to each student’s responses. This helps provide a more accurate picture of learning. Students should not worry if some questions feel challenging; this may mean they are working at a higher level.

What if my child is away on NAPLAN test days?

If your child is absent, the school may arrange another time for them to complete the missed test during the testing period.

How can I support my child?

Your child does not need to study for NAPLAN. The best way to support them is to reassure them that it is just part of their normal school program and to encourage them to do their best. Teachers will make sure students are familiar with the types of questions and feel prepared.

How will results be reported?

NAPLAN results show how your child is performing against national standards for their year level. Results are reported in four levels:

  • Exceeding
  • Strong
  • Developing
  • Needs additional support

Each child will get an individual report later in the year.

How are NAPLAN results used?

  • Parents and teachers use results to talk about student progress.
  • Teachers use them to plan for your child's educational needs.
  • Schools use them to improve teaching programs.
  • Education systems use them to review how schools are supported.

The  Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has also provided an information flyer for Parents and Carers, which is provided below.
