 5/6 CLASSROOM

The Grade 5/6’s have had a wonderful start to the 2026 school year. They have settled in well, re-established routines, and taken on their leadership responsibilities with pride and maturity. We’re looking forward to sharing what we’ll be working on this term and the learning happening in our classroom.

This term, students are strengthening their writing skills through short, focused sentence lessons linked to our class novel 'A Ghost in My Suitcase'. These lessons support students to turn their ideas into clear, well-structured sentences by learning how to explain their thinking, add detail, and show contrast using examples from the text.

By focusing on sentences first, students are gaining confidence in how they express their ideas. They are learning how small changes can make their writing clearer and more engaging for the reader. These skills are then carried into longer pieces of writing, including paragraphs and persuasive texts, and across a range of learning areas.

It has been great to see students becoming more confident writers and taking pride in the way they communicate their thinking.

Maths

This term, students are learning about data by creating and interpreting line graphs and dot plots. They are developing an understanding of key graph features such as titles, labels, scales and axes, which helps them read information accurately and present their own data clearly.

Alongside this, we are incorporating short daily reviews of key mathematical concepts. These regular check-ins give students the chance to revisit important skills, build confidence, and strengthen their understanding over time. They also help students make clear connections between previous learning and new concepts, supporting steady progress in Mathematics.

RE

In Religious Education, students are learning that people can be seen in different ways depending on our relationships with them, and that these different perspectives help us understand someone more fully. Using this idea, students are exploring how Jesus is described in different ways across the Gospels. They are learning that each Gospel writer offers a unique perspective, helping us build a deeper understanding of Jesus’ life and message.

Inquiry - "The Search for Resources"

This term, our Grade 5/6 students are exploring how the world’s resources are not shared evenly, and how this has influenced the movement of people throughout history. Using real examples, students are learning about trade and resources through the development of the Silk Road, discovering how goods, materials and ideas travelled between China and Europe over long periods of time. They will also compare this with the one-way movement of resources taken from the Congo by Belgium, helping students understand how different choices around resources can have very different impacts on people and communities.

Leadership - Jobs/Assembly/SRC

Being a senior student is an exciting part of school life. Our Grade 5/6 students have taken on important daily responsibilities as part of their leadership roles, and it has been wonderful to see the care and maturity they bring to these jobs. They are setting a great example for our younger students and showing what it means to be positive role models within our school community.

Diaries

Each student in Grade 5/6 has chosen their own reading diary for the year. Giving students the opportunity to select their diary helps build ownership and encourages pride in keeping it organised and up to date. These diaries are used to record home reading each week and support the development of consistent reading habits. Diaries are due back at school every Friday so they can be checked and celebrated.
