 3/4 CLASSROOM

It has been a positive and busy start to the year in Grade 3/4. Over the past two weeks, we have been settling into classroom routines and learning.

In English, we began our new book study on Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. Students have explored the characters and setting. They shared their initial thoughts and predictions. In writing, we have been focusing on sentence structure. Students have been learning how to add detail to their sentences to make their writing more interesting and engaging.

We also introduced our new spelling program, SpellEx. Students have been learning about short and long vowels, phonemes, and graphemes. They have also begun exploring prefixes and suffixes and how these change the meaning of words. From next week, students will begin taking home spelling homework. A letter will be sent home explaining the program and how you can support your child at home.

In Maths, students have been revising place value skills. They have been working with numbers up to six digits. This revision supports all other areas of maths we will explore throughout the year.

In Religion, we started our new unit Followers of Jesus.  Students read and discussed the story Jesus Heals Bartimaeus. They explored themes of faith, compassion, and listening to others. Students responded to the story by creating a comic strip to retell the events and show their understanding.

In Inquiry, we have started our new unit on community.  Students explored what a community is and why it is important. They are working on creating their own coat of arms, using chosen symbols and colours to represent who they are and what matters to them.

Reminders:

 • Sport is on Tuesdays.

 • Students are encouraged to read for at least 20 minutes each night and record this in their diaries.
