Year Two
Dear Year Two Community,
What a wonderful past couple of weeks in Term 3.
Reading:
In Reading, Year 2 students have been exploring reading comprehension strategies for summarising both fiction and nonfiction texts. They have engaged with the "Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then" framework to summarise fiction and the "Five Finger Summary" technique for nonfiction texts. Students will continue to explore summarising as part of our new Unit of Inquiry Four, utilising various texts, including information from Schoolbox about ecosystems and geographical features.
Writing:
In Writing, students have been exposed to Information Reports. Students are being exposed to writing about different Ecosystems, topics of their choice and geographical features. The Year 2s have also been exposed to the Writing Workshop which allows them to bring their creativity of writing to life! Writing workshop allows students to choose a writing genre, write it and work through the writing process by selecting topics, drafting, revising, editing and publishing.
Maths:
In Maths, students have completed their unit on Subtraction and Addition where they explored many different strategies including algorithms, the connection between subtraction and addition.
Inquiry:
The Year 2 students have started their new Unit of Inquiry Four, central on the idea that 'Every corner of the earth has different characteristics'. They are currently investigating three distinct types of ecosystems: marine (aquatic), freshwater (aquatic), and terrestrial (land). While practicing their summarising and note-taking skills, students are reading different texts about ecosystems and learning about geographical features within these environments. They are particularly enjoying their research on the Great Barrier Reef and Coober Peddy.
Jeans for Genes day:
On Friday 2nd August, the whole school engaged with Jeans for Genes and raised money for people with a birth defect or genetic disease.
