Design and Digital Technology

By Hudson Hall

It has been a wonderful start to Term 3 in Design and Technology!  The students from all levels are super excited as they will have the chance to design and complete some fantastic projects using some amazing tools!  At Rolling Hills we are lucky to have a laser cutter, a 3D printer, and a nibbler, which allow students to create brilliant things.

The laser cutter is super cool as well as different.  It can cut detailed shapes and patterns out of different materials, including wood.  The students design and choose what they want to create, such as key rings, jewellery and even art projects! We are all looking forward to seeing how our projects progress throughout Semester Two.

The 3D printer is like magic! It takes digital designs and turns them into real objects. Students can choose to make shapes, art, and even useful gadgets, using the website Tinkercad.  This awesome tool allows students to learn about design, materials, and how things work in the digital industry.

The nibbler is another great tool. It cuts and shapes metal and plastic, letting students experiment with different materials. They learn how to use the latest technology and of course, take safety precautions, therefore becoming more confident with technology.

One of the more popular activities is coding on Scratch (also known as making your own game on Scratch).  Throughout 2024 Mr Taylor has seen some of the most advanced games yet, with the students’ imagination and creativity standing out.  He has been very impressed!

I am confident Term 3 will be our best term yet!  Through understanding the great topic of Design and Technology, students will have the necessary skills to work with technology in the future.
