Wellbeing

Well-being is an important topic at Rolling Hills. Well-being means to be comfortable and happy in your surroundings. Also, regarding well-being at Rolling Hills, we all try our best to maintain happy, healthy and respectful relationships with friends and staff.

In grades 5 and 6, they have been looking at Friendology lessons which help teach how to have happy and healthy relationships with friends, parents, staff, and anyone that they can connect with. They have also been learning to use the Friendology 7 steps. The 7 steps are: Healthy Friendships, Friendship Fire, Confront the issue, Talk it Out, Forgive and Forget, Closer and Stronger, and Healthy Friendships. These are to help students understand how to solve issues with friends. Teachers encourage the students to try and use these steps before coming to them to solve a problem. They also use daily check-ins. The purpose of daily check-ins is to check if students are okay and help students if they are having a bad day.

In grades 3 and 4, they have been using visuals to help see students' feelings, since some students may find it tricky or difficult to explain their feelings when they are upset or uncomfortable. They have also been looking into the Respectful Relationships program, which helps students build healthy relationships and build self-confidence. It also helps teach positive and respectful attitudes to class. They have been using check-ins to help check if students are okay and help them when they need it. They also bring comfortable discussions about most things that happen throughout the day.

I think that it is important to know at least one breathing strategy to help calm down and have a moment when things get stressful or tricky. Here is one that is simple, but effective: Deep breathing. Deep breathing is just long, big breaths that help calm you down. An easy way to do this breathing exercise is: breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, breathe out for 4 seconds, and hold for 4 seconds. Repeat this until you feel relaxed.

Keeping tropical fish at home can have a calming effect on the brain.

This is due to all the 'indoor-fins'!
