Division AFL

On Monday the 5 of July the Jells Park footy team went off to compete in the Monash Waverley Division Competition to play against 8 other schools. These schools were the top teams in their respective Districts which included St Justins, Mount Scopus, Pinewood and Good Shepherd.

We played 4 games in our section which included our toughest opponent, Mt Scopus. The winner of this game would play in the Grand Final and have a chance at making regionals. At half time Mt Scopus was up by two goals and Jells had to work hard to come back. Some hard tacking and a determined effort by all the players saw Jells Park come back and win 2 points

We had a dominant performance in the Grand final and were up by 5 goals at half time. St Justins kicked two quick goals in the beginning of the second half, but Jells got them back without any struggle.

At the end Jells Park were impressive winners and were through to regionals!

Thank you to all the parents who came along to support and encourage us during the day.

Hooptime Basketball

On the 30 of July the Level 5’s and 6’s had the opportunity to participate in the Hooptime Competition.

We had 8 teams participating in the competition including 3 All-Star Boys teams, 1 All-Star Girls team, 3 Future Stars teams and 1Rookie team. Once we arrived at the State Basketball Centre everyone got into their uniforms and teams and began warming up. Each team played 4 games and the top team on the ladder got to participate in the grand final.

Our All-Star Boys 1team and All-Star Girls team both competed in the Grand Final and left as the 2024 Hooptime Champions! With a gold medal to celebrate.

We’d like to thank the teachers and parent helpers who came out and helped run this event and to Mr Zach who organised the event.

Soccer

On Tuesday, August 6 we competed in a round-robin soccer tournament. Our team played six games against four different schools. The day before, the Year Six girls on the soccer team held a training session during snack and lunch to prepare for the event.

We arrived at Gardiners Reserve in Burwood at 9:00am, ready to start our warm-ups and listen to some game tactics from our coaches.

By 9:30 we were pumped and excited for our first game of the tournament against PLC Primary School. We started strong, scoring a goal almost immediately! By the end of the game, the score was 4-0, and we were thrilled with our first win.

At 10:30 we played our next game against Mount Waverley North. About two minutes in we scored the first goal. After kicking off again, we quickly scored another. We eased up a bit, allowing them to score, but we stepped up our game and scored again. The final whistle blew, and the score was 4-1. We were proud of our second win.

After our game against Mount Waverley North we had a well-deserved one-hour rest. Then, at 12:00, it was time to face our rivals - St. Justin’s. We played well during the first 10 minutes, but they managed to score, making it 0-1. In the next half they scored two more goals, and despite our best efforts, we couldn’t beat them. The final score was 0-3, marking our first loss of the tournament.

At 1:00 we played our semi-final match against Oakleigh. The game started with us quickly gaining possession of the ball and manoeuvring around their players. We took a shot at the goal, but it was blocked due to the number of defenders. By halftime, the score was 1-0. After a quick chat with our coaches, we returned to the field. As soon as the whistle blew, we scored and then added three more goals. The final score was 4-0, and we were ecstatic to have made it to the finals.

At 1:45 it was time for the final match against our biggest rivals, St. Justin’s. We were pumped and had a quick team chat about some strategies. The game began, and the score remained 0-0, causing us to feel the pressure. Then, during a corner on their side, they scored a goal just before halftime, leaving us trailing by one. As the second half started, we fought hard, but St. Justin’s scored again. With seven minutes left, we sprinted our hearts out, but the final whistle blew with the score at 0-2. Although we were disappointed, we were also incredibly proud of our performance, finishing 2nd in the division. Unfortunately this means we won’t be competing at regionals.
