Curriculum Matters

Foundation

It has been a fun and exciting 2 weeks in Foundation, with lots to celebrate!

Together we have enjoyed celebrating our 100 days of school, Milo Monkey’s birthday party, Junior School Kaboom incursion and our Minibeast incursion. We are so proud of our Foundation students and everything they have achieved in their 100 days of school!

Level 1

As part of our ‘Health and safety' Inquiry unit, the Level 1 students have been busy learning about how to be safe around dogs.

They enjoyed looking at the Pet Town website https://www.pettown.vic.gov.au/ to gather facts for an information report poster.

In Numeracy students have had a major focus on learning the names and properties of 2D and 3D shapes. They produced their own 3D shape mini books to help them with the unit of study.

Level 2

The Level 2 students recently enjoyed an exciting excursion to Rush HQ, where they experienced the joy of bouncing and staying active.

This fun excursion aligns perfectly with our current Inquiry focus on learning about healthy living and being happy, healthy humans, emphasising the importance of physical movement for overall well-being. Encouraging students to move their bodies not only keeps them fit but also boosts their mood and energy levels.

We ended our fun day by going to the Waverley Park playground, which was so much fun!

Level 3

The Potato Olympics

Alongside the athletes competing in Paris, the Level 3 students have themselves been engaged in their very own heated potato battles.

In preparation for the games, they decorated their potato athletes and training camps. In addition to this, they completed athlete profiles, fleshing out inspirational backstories and measuring both their weight and height.

Some of the events have included running, weightlifting, gymnastics and dancing. The students have loved making connections between mathematics and the real world, exploring concepts such as time, length, mass and capacity.

Next week, the potatoes will participate in diving as the final event before the finals where only the best best from across the level will compete for the gold medal.

Level 4

Level 4 have had a great time exploring a range of inventions that have been created, even some that were discovered by accident!

The students have also been loving the 2024 Paris Olympic games!

Students have created their own posters finding information about Australian Athletes and researching the importance of the Olympics. Level 4 has been developing their review writing by creating their own reviews for books, movies and even an invention.

Level 4 have learnt how to use a protractor to measure and classify angles and have even found some angles within our classrooms. Our lucky students have also been allowed to draw on their tables to show their knowledge of angles!

They did a fantastic job!

Level 5

In Level 5 this week, we are lucky to have been learning through the Olympic games. During our reading sessions, we have been researching the history of the games, previous host cities, and the most successful athletes. We have also been reading about the Summer Olympic Games Values, which are very similar to Jells Park’s Values, being Excellence, Respect, and Friendship.

In our maths sessions, we have been using Australia’s medal success to build our percentage abilities and our excel skills. We are so excited to be able to watch Australia doing so well in the 2024 Olympic Games.

In 5S, Jett & Talal treated the students to a mini-Olympics involving table tennis, badminton and Volleyball.

The students had a wonderful time, and they all demonstrated the Olympic values.

Level 6

Last week, our Level 6 cohort came together to celebrate the Paris Olympics in a unique and educational way.

The entire level was split into groups of six, and each group created their own "country." Throughout the week, we competed against each other in various learning tasks, each designed to challenge our skills and bring out the best in teamwork.

One of the most exciting activities was in Maths, where we engineered paper planes. Each country had the chance to test their plane designs by flying them, and we used our measurement skills to see which plane flew the furthest.

It was amazing to see how different designs and strategies led to some impressive distances!

Another highlight of the week was our Literature activity, where we participated in a Readers Theatre.

This was a favourite among many of us, as each country competed by performing scripts with expression and flair. It was a great way to combine our love for reading with a bit of friendly competition.

Olympics Week was not only about celebrating the Paris Games but also about learning, teamwork, and having fun together. We have had such a few two weeks keeping up to date with all things Paris Games.
