Celebrating NAIDOC Week at Our School
NAIDOC Week honoured the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, reminding us of the ongoing journey toward reconciliation. Reconciliation fostered respect and understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, involving building relationships, acknowledging past wrongs, and working together for a shared future. As part of our commitment, we integrated Aboriginal content across our curriculum, enriching our students' educational experience and deepening their cultural understanding.
This year, our Year 9 RISE students led the pilot First Nations Garden Project, transforming our school grounds into a living classroom. This project offered hands-on learning about native plants, traditional ecological knowledge, and the cultural significance of the land. Design thinking, embedded across all learning areas, empowered students to develop critical and creative problem-solving skills. This approach was particularly impactful in projects honouring First Nations people, allowing innovation while respecting Indigenous knowledge and traditions.
We were immensely proud of these initiatives and their outcomes. They reflected our commitment to holistic education, cultural understanding, and respect for First Nations peoples. We were honoured to have had Uncle Shane from the Bunurong Land Council perform the smoking ceremony, and Welcome to Country and Uncle Mark Brown for his beautiful Yidiki performance. Special thanks to our KESO officer, Mark Lumley, and our Year 9 RISE ACCur teachers and students for their relentless efforts and enthusiasm.
Thank you for your continued support. Together, we are making a difference.
Welcome to Country
