What's On In SAKG

GARDEN
The students form F-6 have all had lots of opportunities this year to get into the garden. They have weeded, composted, grown plants from seed to harvest. The chickens have had lots of cuddles and treats. The students love any opportunity for a chicken cuddle or a fresh garden snack. I often hear “Hey Ash can we eat this?” as they point to an edible flower. The Whitehorse students have been learning so many real world life skills and personal skills in the SAKG.
Things I have especially loved witnessing in the garden this year are,
-Responsibility and leadership from the Environment team caring for the chickens everyday and implementing a school wide classroom composting system.
-Seeing the shy student lead a group with a garden task
- Watching the kindness, friendship and maturity with their classmates.
-The child who is afraid of chickens, growing to love them
-Hearing the stories the students share about what’s growing in their own gardens
KITCHEN
In the kitchen this year students have enjoyed making food from scratch using school grown ingredients harvested from the garden. The produce has been added to all the meals, even bread sticks with veggies like pumpkin mixed into the dough. I have loved helping the students try new vegetables and flavours and also giving them more opportunities to try a variety of vegetables, herbs and fruits in a new way.
It brings me so much joy to see students trying new foods, especially enjoying vegetarian food and being proud of cooking their meal as a class. When students enjoy the food so much, they want the recipe to take home. This allows them to share the passion for healthy food with their family. Starting with the raw ingredients to producing a full meal from scratch gives them such a sense of achievement and wonderment. They have learnt so many amazing skills in the kitchen at school this year. Please encourage your child to share this at home as I’m sure you will be amazed by their capabilities and skills.
Garden Poem
Kind hearts are the garden
Kind words are the roots
Kind thoughts are the flowers
Kind deeds are the fruits
Take care of your garden
And keep out the weeds
Fill it with sunshine
Kind words and kind deeds
Our garden is home to lots of scarecrows
To dozens of kids who learn, play and grow
Trees, peas, bees they sway with the breeze
Students love the year they wish it never ended
The garden is their home, to them its splendid
