Teaching & Learning Update

As we enter the last few weeks of the year, our classrooms are full of energy and great learning. Teachers are continuing with completing assessments to help them write end of year reports. At the same time, they are still planning lessons that keep students active, engaged, and challenged. It has been wonderful to see students trying their best, building new skills, and enjoying their learning every day.
We have now completed two sessions of our Prep Transition Program with our 2026 Prep students. Some of our Year 5/6 students have been helping during these sessions, this has been a great success with many positive new relationships already forming.
Below is a short update from each year level, sharing what students have been working on this term.
See below for a snapshot of learning at WPS
Prep
Grant from St Andrew's Hives came to visit our school to help us learn more about Bees! We got to dress up in beekeeper suits, taste some real honey, feel honeycomb and see REAL Bees. We had to keep a careful eye out for the queen bee. She has a really long abdomen and was busy laying eggs. We have a fantastic time. Thank you Grant!
Year 1
Students are continuing to refine their Readers Theatre presentations as they prepare to perform for parents and caregivers. Each student has selected one personal goal to improve on and is thoughtfully applying it during their practice sessions. There is a growing sense of excitement in the classroom as they look forward to sharing their hard work and creativity in the upcoming presentations.
Year 2
Our chia pets are growing beautifully, with most of them now showing thick, bright green sprouts across the top. The students are excited to check them each day, noticing how much taller and fuller they become with consistent watering and sunlight.
Year 3
Year 3 students have had an amazing time on their excursion to Werribee Zoo, seeing lots of different animals. They went on a safari bus and saw giraffes, zebras and camels. During the day they participated in a lesson about predators and prey and examined the bones of different types of animals.
Year 4
Our Year 4 Inquiry unit has focused on animals in our local area, with students exploring how we can support and protect our native wildlife. They are now applying this knowledge through hands-on projects, including constructing habitat boxes that will be installed in our school grounds to provide safe and secure spaces for local wildlife. Students are also sewing animal pouches to donate to our local wildlife shelter, supporting the care of injured and orphaned animals in our community.
Year 5/6
In the lead-up to graduation, our Year 6 students will be enjoying student vs teacher sports matches, full of energy, teamwork, and friendly competition to celebrate their primary school journey. Meanwhile, our Year 5 students have been presenting their leadership speeches in preparation for next year, showcasing their hard work with confidence. It’s been wonderful to see students stepping up and embracing these opportunities to shine.
Performing Arts:
This term in Performing Arts, our students have shown wonderful enthusiasm and teamwork as they learned their dances for the End-of-Year Concert. We are incredibly proud of their dedication and can’t wait to share their fantastic performances with our school community!
Dig2Dine
Students have been learning about how food waste impacts our environment and exploring practical ways we can reduce it. They have also been building their cooking skills while preparing a range of delicious recipes using fresh ingredients. Please visit Seesaw to see the recipes we have been cooking, celebrate the wonderful learning happening in our kitchens, and ask your child to share some ways your family can reduce food waste at home.
PE
This term in P.E., students have shown fantastic growth, confidence and energy across all year levels. Our Preps developed their coordination and body awareness through PMP, dance and early movement skills. Grades 1 and 2 expanded on these with dance and the forehand strike, building control and rhythm. Students in Grades 3–6 took on more advanced skills, including tennis forehand strike, cricket skills and AFL punt kicking, showing great perseverance and teamwork. It has been wonderful to see every child challenge themselves, improve their skills and enjoy being active.
STEM
Our Prep learners have been exploring the magic of seasons. Our Grade 1 and 2 students have been busy exploring sound through fun, hands-on investigations. They’ve been discovering how vibrations make sound and experimenting with different actions to compare pitch (high/low) and volume (loud/soft). Our Grade 3/4 explorers have been diving into the wonders of water. Our Grade 5/6 changemakers have been investigating the big questions in Earth Science.
Art
From woolly monitor lizards to bright pastels birds... From clay cupcakes to newly designed fence posts... Each year level has had its own adventure in Visual Art this term. A colourful way to wrap up the year!
Kind regards,
