Learning in Year 1

Mini Makers
Our integrated unit 'Mini Makers' has well and truly begun. We have been busy designing and learning new joining techniques to help us build our lands and pet rock homes. The children were thoroughly engaged about the techniques and can now share how they can use a flange, tab, slot or brace join to build solid structures. It is wonderful to see so many imaginative creations, but also the skills of problem solving, resillience and perseverance during the makings of. Have a look at how amazing our work is going!
Literacy
We have started to take advantage of the beautiful weather with an outdoor writing session in the sensory garden. What a lovely spot to be inspired! We also used this space to celebrate National Fairy Bread day. We made some delicious fairy bread and gobbled it up by the river. Then we went back inside to write a procdure.
We are loving all the shared experiences for writing.
To coincide with our Mini Makers unit, we have delved into some fantastic picture story books about characters that design and build. It is fantastic to hear so many of us use the vocabulary we have learnt into our everyday conversations and writing. We absolutely love the words miniscule, flabbergasted and scoffed! These stories have also helped us to make meaningful connections with ourselves and between texts. The children continue to show their love of reading each week as we build on our growing knowledge of designing, building, inventors and engineering!
Math
Over the past few weeks, we have revisited the operations of subtraction and addition. We have been learning that there are different ways we can solve and some are more efficient than others. Did you know that we can count back or count on to solve subtraction problems? We used number lines to help us quickly see which way was more efficient. We will continue to practise this skill as it has been challenging for us to think about counting on when we take away.
We hope that the children are talking about all the wonderful things we are doing in class and we can't wait to share more of our learning next time!
