Learning in Year 5

It's almost the end of term, but Year 5 aren't slowing down! The students made Miss Syme and Ms Jay very proud by smashing out their end of year assessments over the past few weeks. Hopefully they are proud of themselves too as they reflect on how much they've learnt this year!

On top of assessments, there's been lots of extra activities the students have been participating in. A group of inspired Year 5s created a small business to raise money for charity, fantastic sofcrosse and netball teams have represented GRPS in close competitions and the Student Action Team is filled with motivated 5s that are working on ideas to improve our school.

The students are also thrilled to meet their buddies for next year! They made Best Buddy necklaces to give to their buddies this Wednesday morning.

The excitement levels are off the charts!

We've also managed some learning amongst the busyness...

English

Students are developing a digital picture storybook based on a character strength. They are planning, writing and illustrating the book with the target audience of a Prep student. Once finished, they will share their book with the current Preps, practising the skills they will need for being a buddy in 2026.

Maths

In Maths, students have enjoyed our finances project where they have learnt how to stick to a budget for a weekly grocery shop. They estimated costs, added up totals and made changes depending on their expenses. This data was then used to make graphs and write statements, giving the students insights into everyday costs.

Our Disasters Unleashed unit is wrapping up soon. We made awesome bushfire paintings and beautiful flood/drought diamante poems. Now we are focusing on our end of term project. Students are writing, rehearsing and presenting a script for a news report about a specific disaster hitting the land. They will work together to show the knowledge they've accumulated during our unit in a fun and creative way!
