Learning in Year 4

What's been happening in Year 4?
Sport
Our Year 4 students have been thoroughly enjoying their Friday sport sessions as they prepare for the Year 5/6 interschool sport program next year. Throughout the term, they have had the opportunity to trial a range of sports including Softcross, Hot Shots tennis, Volleybounce, T-Ball, and Netball. Students have been learning the fundamental skills, rules, and teamwork required for each game, building both their confidence and game sense. It has been a fantastic way for them to stay active, try new sports, and get ready for the exciting opportunities ahead.
Maths
Students have been learning to solve worded problems using the RUCSAC strategy, helping them break down questions, identify the key information, and choose the correct operation to solve the problem. They’ve applied this method across a wide range of contexts, including measurement, time, money, fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
To build independence and confidence, students have been working through task cards and online quizzes, while teachers continued to support learning through targeted small-group instruction. It has been wonderful to see their problem-solving resilience grow, along with their willingness to tackle challenging questions.
We have especially loved seeing the boost in confidence as students become more fluent with their maths facts. A big congratulations to those who have been practising their times tables, your hard work is paying off!
Overall, it’s been a fantastic finish to the year, and we are incredibly proud of each student's progress in Maths.
Literacy
In English this term, our Year 4 students have been fully immersed in our class novel, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They have engaged in rich discussions about character development, motivations, and the choices characters make, as well as making thoughtful predictions about where the story might lead next. With the end of the book approaching, students are looking forward to watching the film adaptation next week and comparing the similarities and differences between the two versions.
As we finish the year, students will begin returning their library books, but there’s no need to worry, our readers have plenty of options! Many students enjoy exploring audiobooks on ePlatform or reading through our Epic! digital library.
Students have also been working incredibly hard to finalise their poetry and published writing pieces. They have created beautiful, thoughtful designs to accompany their work, and should feel extremely proud of what they have achieved. We can’t wait for families to read through these wonderful pieces when they are sent home at the end of the year.
Integrated
In Integrated Studies, our Year 4 students have been busily working on their First Fleet research projects.
They have been exploring topics such as the convicts, the ships, and the captains, as well as learning about the perspectives of Indigenous Peoples and the impact of European arrival. Students have shown great curiosity and effort as they build their understanding of this important part of Australia’s history.
A reminder that our upcoming excursion to the Melbourne Museum is on Wednesday 10th December. Please ensure your child wears comfortable shoes. Due to strict museum guidelines, students may only bring a small lunchbox on the day, and school bags will remain at school.
