Learning in Year 3

English
This fortnight, students have been exploring narrative writing by creating their own stories using a book with no words, The Lion and the Mouse. Working in small groups, they brainstormed nouns, adjectives, verbs, and dialogue and are bringing each page of the story to life before compiling them into their own illustrated class book. We have also been focusing on our integrated vocabulary linked to Antarctica Moves, along with our spelling words for the next two weeks. Students will be applying their syllable knowledge to break down tricky words and using graphing skills to track their daily spelling progress.
Mathematics
As part of our end-of-year review, students re-measured their height and were very excited to discover that most have grown between 3–5 cm since the start of the year, all whole demonstating how measurement and decimals can be linked in real life eg 123cm =1.23m. We’ve also been exploring directional language and compass points in our Location and Transformation unit. Students have used their knowledge to create a range of directions them to navigate around the school and apply these skills to a fun mapping mini project.
Integrated Studies – Antarctica Moves
We are wrapping up our Antarctica unit, and students have begun creating their pizza-box dioramas. Using a range of recycled materials, they are designing Antarctic scenes that include a magnetic, friction, or gravity-based element. Their creativity and problem-solving skills have truly shone through during this hands-on project.
