Year 8
Hamper Collection
A very big thank you to the Year 8s, their families and our wider school community, who contributed to our Year 8 Lenten Hamper collection. We were able to donate four very full basket loads of pasta and pasta sauce.
'Get Into Reading' Book Drive
Last term we had a number of parents ask if we could make some book recommendations for their Year 8 kids.
Thanks to the expertise of our Resource Centre staff, we have some comprehensive lists of popular texts for boys and girls.
Whilst we have these texts in our library, we would love to be able to bolster the stock so that all of our Year 8s can enjoy a book from this list over the course of the school year.
If you have a copy of one of these books that you no longer have a use for or you would like to buy and donate a novel from the list, we would be very grateful. We will make all books available through our library borrowing system.
The lists of novels have been put up in our Year 8 Tutor Group rooms and our Tutor Group teachers will be working with students, encouraging them to take some delight in reading, particularly as the weather gets colder and it might just be nice to, 'snuggle up by the heater with a good book!'
VET Construction Work Placement
In the second last week of Term 1 our VET Construction students undertook their final 35 hours of mandatory work placement. Henry Brown completed his placement with JMK Landscaping. James from JMK was very impressed with Henry’s work ethic and the respectful conduct he displayed throughout his work placement. Bolcon Constructions hosted Zena Colacino and Dario from Bolcon was most impressed with Zena’s positive attitude, willingness to ask questions and ability to carry out a variety of tasks. Jamie Toohill worked with Total Plaster Supplies Echuca and the feedback from his work placement supervisor was, and I quote “Jamie was one of the best work placement students I have had and is a credit to himself”. Jamie was also offered a job with Total Plaster Supplies once he has completed his 2024 studies at Moama Anglican Grammar. Radeski Earthmoving hosted Ben Crossley for the week. Mark, the owner, was very impressed with Ben’s work ethic and commented that “Ben would be an asset to any company”.
MAG would like to thank all the companies that have supported our VET students as they completed the mandatory 70 hours of work placement over two years. Without the local companies continued support, our students would not gain the necessary workplace skills and knowledge they require be awarded their Certificate II in Construction Pathways.
Sydney Royal Easter Show 2024
Agriculture students Lexie Heinrich, Dehlila Hawken and Aleisha Moon recently competed in the Dairy Junior Cattle Judging State Final at the prestigious Sydney Royal Easter Show. Competing against 15 - 25 year olds from across NSW, the girls judged heifer and in-milk classes.
Dehlila said, "Being able to compete at the Sydney Show was an amazing experience. It was great to learn heaps of new things about judging dairy cattle from other competitors and also from the experienced overhead judge, who was from Italy. It was also good to meet new people interested in junior judging and get to look around other exhibits and things at the show."
Lexie commented, “Competing at the Sydney Royal Easter Show for the second time was an amazing experience again. It was a great learning opportunity and meeting new people who are like minded was good also. This year our overjudge was from Italy and it was great to hear his opinion on the cows and receive his feedback. Everyone who competed deserved to be there and did an amazing job!”
Aleisha was shortlisted to give reasons about her placings on the microphone. Aleisha also participated in the Dairy Youth Challenge. In this competition, teams of youth clip, parade and judge dairy animals in a tight timeframe and Aleisha’s team placed third out of twelve teams in this fun and interactive event.
Aleisha reflected on the experience, “I enjoyed this activity because I got to meet new people from across the country as well as getting to try something that I had never done before. My role in the team was to participate in the judging of the dairy animals and I did this with two other girls. I learnt a lot of new things about dairy cattle like the ideal way the animals should be presented before they go to be judged as well as new terminology to use in future when judging dairy cattle.”
Moama Anglican Grammar was proud of the girls’ judging skills and their enthusiasm to prepare for and compete in a high profile event against many experienced junior judges.
