Assistant Principal 7 - 12

Mitch Coombs

As Term 1 draws to a close I would like to extend my thanks to the entire school community for your support in what has been an incredibly busy and productive term.

To our students, it has been incredible to see the growth you have exhibited, both academically and socially.  It is important to keep this momentum going, aiming for steady, incremental growth so that you can get to exactly where you want to get to.  Remember, if there is something we can help you with in achieving your goals, make sure you let us know.

Our families have been instrumental in supporting this growth and we hope to see this continue. Likewise, we appreciate you communicating with us so that we can do the best job possible for the students.

We recognise that education does not happen in the vacuum of the school, the wider community is essential in providing our students with a well-rounded education.  If there is any feedback about ways in which we can form better community connections for the students to learn within the community or for the community to come into the school and support the student’s education, we welcome your suggestions.

Finally, our staff are amazing at what they do. They are the people who guide the students with care, expertise and passion through their education and help shape the students into the successful young adults they’ll become.

It is this combination which makes the true ‘Excellence Through Opportunity’ which epitomises what Kyabram P-12 College can offer.

As we near the Easter break, the academic achievements of our students are beginning to be recognised in a more formal manner, through SACs, VET assessments and the continuous assessment for our Applied Learning students all happening in the senior end, through to Reportable Learning Tasks (RLTs) and NAPLAN for our lower year levels.

This can be a stressful time for our students, so we thank those at home for their continued support which they offer their student and we encourage you to reach out to the school if advice or help is needed in this area.

As this Term draws to a close, we would like to congratulate all students and families on their efforts this term. It has been jam packed with lots of exciting opportunities. We hope you've all had a terrific start to the school year. Primary Progress Reports are now live.

Your child's report celebrates their efforts across work habits and specific curriculum skills. Should you have any queries, please contact your child's teacher.

This stage of the year is also an opportunity to reflect on how lucky our students have been, with opportunities such as Harmony Day, our swimming sports, Be Kind Day, and the many other specific sports days such as badminton, lawn bowls and tennis which have continued to engage our students and offer them such great opportunities.

Our staff continue to offer students excellent chances to fulfill our motto of ‘Excellence through Opportunity’ by organising amazing incursions such as the Agri-tech road show, white card training and barista training amongst others.  Equally, excursions such as the Ky Survivor camp to Kooyoora State Park, the geography field trip and the Bendigo Art excursion were hugely engaging and practical for all the students involved, adding a ‘real world’ relevance to the work which was being done in class.

The feeling around the school has been really positive through the implementation of our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) program, a program which has been complemented by initiatives such as a hotly contested staff vs student table tennis competition (congratulations on the win Tony Greely), and lunch time activities for students such as supervised access to the gym and sessions with the Shepparton Gators in the hall.

It has also been particularly pleasing to see the implementation of the All-Captains council.  Ably lead by our school captains, it allows a forum for all our captains across the college to be able to express student voice in a manner which allows for positive, student-lead change in the school, making it a better place for everyone.

We are looking forward to new staff joining us in Term 2.  These are staff members who will fit into the ethos of Kyabram P-12 College and who will be invaluable in continuing to support our students to develop a strong ‘growth mindset’ which will be essential in assuring student success, both now and later in life.

Finally, I wish you all a very happy and safe break – we look forward to seeing you all again next term, ready to continue your educational journey with us.
