Learning in Action

Literacy:

During Term 2, we will be engaging in informative and persuasive literacy units and will link these to our geography inquiry unit. Students have begun non fiction texts, identifying the main idea and practising note taking skills to support their writing. They will practise using the notes taken to develop cohesive paragraphs, leading to the creation of a whole text. Students will be explicitly taught sentence level grammar and spelling skills through whole class writing and word work sessions. During independent reading and writing time, students will work towards their relevant learning goals, spending time with their teacher and peers to support their learning.

Preview: This fortnight students will revise the purpose and features of non fiction texts, and begin to explore note taking as a whole class. They will then explore transferring this into a single paragraph. Students will identify the subject and verb within a sentence as well as learn about the four sentence types.

Maths:

This term students will deepen their understanding of addition and subtraction, working on goals based on their individual learning needs in these areas. Students will practise trying different strategies to work out the most efficient way to solve numerical and worded addition and subtraction problems. We will begin the term focusing on addition and continue with subtraction. In addition, we will continue to practise Maths Masters to develop our maths fluency.

During our measurement unit, Grade 3 students have been exploring location, practising giving and interpreting directional language and learning about maps. We have begun exploring the purpose of maps, identifying key features of a map and interpreting maps by using grid references. They also created a bird's eye view map of their classroom.

Problem solving tasks this term will allow students to practise two strategies; making a table or chart and finding a pattern or rule.

Preview: Over the next fortnight, we will explore the skills of adding numbers together in any order as well as breaking numbers up to help solve addition problems

Inquiry

This term, our inquiry unit focuses on geography, specifically looking at Australia. We will identify the states and capital cities of our country, whilst also making connections to indigenous perspectives. The second half of the unit will explore four significant places in Australia in detail.

Preview: We will begin the unit exploring where Australia is located on a world map, noting the neighbouring countries, and then labelling the states and capital cities on a map of Australia.

Wellbeing

This term Grade 3 students will continue following the learning sequences of Friendology and Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR). Students have revised the key concepts covered last term and will practise labelling emotions and building strong relationships with their peers. We will deepen our understanding of friendships and the personal strengths that contribute to positive friendships and relationships.

Preview: This fortnight, students will further develop their emotional literacy by labelling emotions and understanding different emotional triggers. They will practise being a Friendship Ninja and delve deeper into the value of honesty within friendships.

Exciting times ahead in STEM!

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.

Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.

Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. Here are a few ways you can contribute:

Opportunities to help:

  • Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.
  • If you own or are a part of a company or business who would be willing to sponsor our engineering program.
  • If you have connections with hardware stores/companies, helping us to make contact in order to obtain suitable engineering resources.
  • If you have any household STEM-related materials such as; plastic bottles, milk bottle lids, masking tape, balloons, wooden skewers, plastic or paper cups, unwanted CD’s or DVD’s, Aluminium Foil please drop them off outside the STEM room.
  • Construction Crew: If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program.
