Stage 6 Japanese Excursion to UTS

On Friday, 5th April, Years 11 and 12 Japanese students visited the University of Technology, Sydney. They experienced a 90 minute Japanese university lesson and, in particular, studied more advanced grammar, vocabulary and writing skills.

Our students wrote formal letters in Japanese by analysing, decoding and translating model letters followed by writing collaboratively with university students. It was not only an observation of how university students learn Japanese but also a great opportunity for them to talk about their pathway.

After the intense Japanese lesson, our students had lunch at a Zundo Ramen restaurant and experienced ordering meals in only Japanese (no English!) and eating noodles using chopsticks. We also visited Japanese grocery shop Maruyu (See a photo- Matcha ice cream!) and Regent Place Shopping Centre where we enjoyed Daiso (cute stickers and traditional ink blush), Asian grocery shop (Mochi ice cream) and Gacha-gacha as well as the scenery of Japanese restaurant malls in old down town.

There were many places we could find “Japan” and experience the Japanese-speaking community in Sydney.

Tanoshikatta! (It was enjoyable day)

Japanese Language Teacher

Last Friday year 11 and 12 Japanese ventured into the big smoke amidst the brewing storm. They valiantly pursued a university lecture at UTS, upskilling them to a superior Japanese language knowledge. But it wasn’t all an uphill battle. After our efforts we treated ourselves with a trip to the Japanese grocery and cooled our firing brains with some soft serve matcha ice cream. We heated ourselves back up again at ramen zundo where we devoured some delicious ramen bowls (おいしかった!).  Following our courageous leader, sensei, we successfully navigated our way through the concrete jungle finding ourselves at Regent Place where we treasure hunted our favourite Japanese themed goods. Finally, we hightailed it back to cross the Nepean before the water could thwart our escape. A day full of merriment, curiosity and learning was had by all.
