Rowing

2024 marks a significant milestone for Kinross Wolaroi Rowing, as it celebrates 20 years since the inception of its program. From humble beginnings with just one coach, 15 novice athletes, a rusty old tinny, and a couple of second-hand boats, the program has evolved into a powerhouse in Australian school rowing.

At the Australian Rowing Championships held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Kinross Wolaroi Rowing emerged as the top-performing school, a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in the program. This historic achievement will forever be etched in the annals of our school's rowing history, thanks to the collective efforts of athletes, coaches, parents, supporters, alumni, the Principal, and the zealous enthusiasts of the Australian Schools' rowing scene.

With over 2000 athletes from numerous clubs and schools competing, the Nationals provided a platform for showcasing the spirit of teamwork and unity. Throughout the campaign, emphasis was placed on a "team effort," with individuals and crews rallying together as one cohesive unit.

A standout performance came from Lucy Reidy, who exhibited sheer determination and skill in the u17 Women's single scull, clinching a Bronze medal in the final after an impressive semi-final victory. Lucy's achievement served as a catalyst for the entire squad, igniting a fire of competitiveness that propelled 7 out of 8 crews into A-Finals. The rest as they say, is history.

Special congratulations to the following athletes who secured medals at the regatta:

🥇 1st U17 Girls Eight – Isabel Grout, Maddy O’Brien, Lucy Reidy, Grace Tancred, Ruby Leigo, Rahni Jarick, Molly Mason, Mhairi Wyllie, coxed by Jane Bruce.

🥉 3rd U17 Women’s Single – Lucy Reidy.

🥉 3rd U17 Women’s Coxed Quad – Maddy O’Brien, Isabel Grout, Ruby Leigo, Lucy Reidy, coxed by Jane Bruce.

5 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze is pretty clever for a bunch of kids from the Central West.

While these achievements are remarkable, they reflect the collective effort and commitment of the entire squad. At Kinross Wolaroi Rowing, the mantra remains: "When one of us wins, we all win."

Rugby

Our Rugby season finally got under way last Monday when a selection of our Opens players played a trial game on Ex-Students field in front of a healthy and vocal crowd. Our opponents, Erindale College, travelled up from Canberra for the game and it was played in a tremendous spirit. We were able to give 31 players some game time and it was pleasing to come away with a 31 – 24 win. Well done to all boys involved.

Our first official compulsory training for all boys and girls players begins this Saturday. All players are expected to be on field in Kinross playing gear, with mouth guards ready to go on field at 8.30am. Players should arrive by 8.15am at the latest. Our players will be running through a number of fitness and skills drills and this will be a great opportunity for our coaches to assess our players. Training will be completed by 10.00am. We will go ahead with the session despite the rain!

Finally, in outstanding news we have had 13 girls selected to represent the ISA in Girls Rugby 7s. Last Wednesday a number of our girls attended selection trials at Barker College in Sydney. Our girls were brilliant and showed tremendous fitness, skill and aggression and really sent a message to Sydney schools that our girls are up for the challenge. We should be incredibly proud of all girls who trialled. The following girls were selected and this is a huge win for our developing program.

ISA Opens – Lilly Clarke, Sophie Luelf, Phoebe Smith, Eden Hawker, Maggie Kirby.

ISA U16s – Kylis Delaney, Katie Lawler, Tiari Delaney, Clancy Murray, Lucy Robb, Maddy O’Brien, Clancy Murray, Harriet Sinclair.

Brilliant work Ladies.

Cricket Report

Week 10, Term 4

The season that commenced for our Winter Training squad in Term 3 of 2023 has officially concluded, and what a season it has been. As will be reported below, Kinross Cricket has had tremendous success this season, and all players and coaches are congratulated for their efforts.

Saturday 23 March saw the final fixture of the ODCA Cricket Competition take place at Riawena Oval. The Grand Final saw Kinross’ 1st XI taking on Centrals Cricket Club, who had earlier in the year had a winning record against the Kinross side. Kinross had strong performances in both their fielding and batting innings, and ultimately were crowned champions of the Orange District Cricket Association 2nd Grade Competition. Congratulations go to Walter Prowse and Matthew Byrne for leading and mentoring this young team so ably this season – and to the students, well done on a fantastic year.

On the evening of the Grand Final, at the ODCA awards night, Kinross cricketers also earned recognition for outstanding individual efforts over the season. Congratulations to:

  • Ashton Nock: Centenary Cup leading run scorer
  • Samuel Spliet: Centenary Cup leading wicket taker
  • Walter Prowse: Second Grade leading run scorer, Grand Final player of the match and Second Grade Player of the Year

The outstanding achievements of our teams are highlighted by our season results:

  • Regional Finalists of the 2023/24 Douglas Shield (Opens)
  • Premiers of the 2023 Dale McIntosh Trophy (Orange, Year 8 T20 Competition)
  • Premiers of the 2023/24 ODJCA Under 14 Premiership

It is my pleasure to invite all players, parents and guardians to the 2023/24 Kinross Wolaroi Cricket Club awards ceremony to formally conclude our season. This will be held in the Dorothy Knox Hall (PLC), on Sunday 5 May. The date of this ceremony will follow the final of the Wiburd Shield competition in Term 2.
