Celebrations, Observations, Adventures, Shout-Outs and Triumphs

Year 7 English Fuse

Once there was a boy with a beautiful voice,

When it came to sport, singing was his choice.

He travelled the world when he was so young,

That way he became famous for the way he sung.

One night the dreaded voice came,

That evening was filled with nothing but shame.

Squeaky and sharp his new voice stayed,

Destroying his pitch and killing his fame.

He cried and cried ‘l cannot sing’!

And through his rage he screamed ‘what is this thing?!’

His parents rushed in and said ‘don’t you see?’

‘What you have caught is puberty’

‘Don’t you worry it will go away’

‘And when you will sing’,

‘It’ll sound a different way’

‘But don't you worry different is cool’

‘So don't you stop, cause when you sing you rule!’

Science Week at Surf Coast

Science Week was a week of exciting activities at Surf Coast, where students learned about the wonders of science.

On the first day of science week, we had an open lunch time at the CEC  (Coastal Education Centre). Students had the opportunity to see and touch some of the local marine life that we have on display.

In the Education Perfect Science Competition our students answered a massive 11000+ questions placing us in the top 100 schools across Australia and New Zealand. Special mention to year 8 students who were our top scoring year level!

In the bridge building competition, students had to design and build a bridge out of popsicle sticks and glue. The winning bridge held a weight of 52kg, which was 661 times the weight of the bridge!  Well done to Riley, Felix, Harper and Kaidyn of Year 10.

We also had a science demonstrations session, where students learned about physics and chemistry through a series of interactive demonstrations.  Some students even got to hold fire!

Science Week was a great opportunity for students to learn about science and have fun at the same time.  We are already looking forward to next year's Science Week!

Year 8 Science Week

FLOURISH: Our Year 8 students made some fun, clever (and delicious) content for Science Week.

Year 9 Science Week

STRIVE: Students in Year 9 got to watch our lobster get fed and also got to study the recently shedded exoskeleton.  The act of escaping from the old shell is called ecdysis (from the Greek, ekdysis meaning getting out).   As adults, males typically will shed or molt once a year, and females once every two years so they can begin to grow and with it, a new layer of exoskeleton beneath the old shell.

Year 10 Science Week

UNITE: As part of Science Week, our Year 10 students made mousetrap cars!  The mousetrap is attached to string which is wound around the axle, so when it releases, it pulls the string away from the axle, powering the car.

Year 11 Science Week

STRIVE: As part of Science Week, the Year 11's ran DNA through gel electrophoresis to determine the traits of specific athletes in Biology last week.  This work is great real life and hands-on learning that is preparing them for there assessment on inheritance the following week.

Outdoor Education

FLOURISH: Students in Year 9 Outdoor Education participated in a bush walk in the Iron Bark Basin. They carried camping stoves and enjoyed a cooked lunch to practice for their camp next term.

Also, our other Year 9 Outdoor Education class went for a bush walk along Bells Beach. Such a beautiful view of our local coast.

Hands On Learning ~ Queenscliff Marine & Freshwater Discovery Centre

RESPECT: Monday and Tuesday Hands On Learning group went down to Queenscliff Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre.

We are lucky to work with such a great organisation.  They showed us around the centre and we were able to give back by cleaning up and gardening around the centre, we look forward to going back again next term.

HOL / Voc. Major ~ The Good Human Factor

UNITE: Hands On Learning students and some of our Vocational Major students attended 'The Good Human Factor' school workshop with Cooper Chapman.  We learned about the importance of investing in your mental health, what it means to be a 'Good Human' and show that if we live with solid foundational values, we can maintain positive well-being.

VCE Psychology ~ Art Vo

FLOURISH: On Tuesday our VCE Psychology students went to Melbourne to visit Art Vo as part of their inquiry into "What influences a person's perception of the world".  Across the day, students identified depth cues and visual perception principles used in optical illusions. This was a great way for students to revise for their upcoming SAC this week!

College Captains ~ Vietnam Veterans Service

RESPECT: A very special thank you to our wonderful school captains, Mila, Billy & Peri for assisting in conducting the intimate and respectful Vietnam Veterans Service held at Torquay RSL on Friday, 18th August.

Year 7 Interschool Basketball

UNITE: On Thursday 10 August, the Year 7 girls represented our school in interschool Basketball.  The girls were in a really strong pool playing Western heights, Grovedale and Bannockburn.

Our team did a great job all day, representing the school and demonstrating to the highest level the school values of strive to be their best, working hard all day in each and very game, united as a team, sharing the ball and encouraging and supporting each other so well on the court. They were respectful and showed great sportsmanship towards their opposition and referees and as a result flourished with the outcome of the day having had fun, competed at their best and represented the school well.  All the girls contributed evenly throughout the day, all skilfully collaborating as a team.  Well done girls, you should be very proud of how you played and represented our school.

Year 8 Interschool Table Tennis Comp

RESPECT: The “Year 8 Girls Interschool Table Tennis Competition” was run on Monday 6th of August. The day started with a solid win against Northern Bay and a narrow loss to fellow coastal school Bellarine in our first two matches of the competition.

Our final group match was a walkover against Geelong High which meant the girls progressed through to the Semi-Finals and would come up against Matthew Flinders who finished first in their group.

The team led by Sarah Speldewinde and including Chloe Muscroft, Scarlett Delmo and Milena Tsiantos (Jasmine Watkins as our scorer) came out firing winning 3 out of 4 of their singles matches. The ladies then capitalised on their lead and managed to finish the job (4-2) by winning one of their two doubles matches.

In the final, we were pitted against Belmont High who were also the underdog in their semi-final. We started well with the girls battling hard against their Belmont counterparts. Unfortunately, after the singles we found ourselves trailing 1-3 with Sarah keeping us in it with a masterclass of table tennis.

Tasked with a near-impossible challenge our girls dug deep and played some top-class table tennis to stun their Belmont opponents. Both pairs won their matches against their respective opponents which tied the two teams 3-3. After a countback on games scores, it was found we had managed to edge Belmont 11-10 overall capping off a remarkable comeback.

The Team masterfully coached by Mr Darke and assistant Mr Mawdsley were brilliant all day and throughout deserved the win. They will now prepare for the next round in October where the sky’s the limit.

Year 8 Girls Basketball

UNITE: On Monday the 7th of August, a team of amazing young women from Year 8 represented Surf Coast Secondary College. The team consisted of Indy Gorman, Macy Doyle, Aaliyah Mitchell, Maeve Boyd, Sophia Hogan, Ke'ali Sadler, Lily Jessen and Sunny Brogan.

There were 3 pools of 3 teams, and we found ourselves playing in the most competitive pool.  It meant that in the first round of the heat, our team played against Belmont High School and Western Heights. These were the two teams who went head-to-head in the final last year.  Western Heights also has a specialist sporting program for Basketball, which according to one of their coaches, play up to 6 times a week.   This lead to an extremely high level of competition where the team worked really well together to be as competitive as possible.   I was really proud of the perseverance and determination that was demonstrated.

In the end, Belmont High and Western Heights played off in the Grand final again, which was a hotly contested game.  Our amazing girls played in a consolation final against Bannockburn and had a chance to show how good they were, winning convincingly.

It was a really fun day out, and the girls did the school proud, offering to help other schools score and representing us well.  It was a pleasure to get to spend time with such a lovely group of young people.

Lions Youth of the Year

STRIVE: Last night, SCSC had three students participate in the Lions Youth of the Year at the Torquay Lions Club. This nationally recognised program has a proud history in encouraging and fostering leadership skills in Australian students, by emphasising qualities like contribution to the community and school, public speaking, academic skills, sporting and cultural involvement, Youth of the Year aims to bring forth the next generation of outstanding young Australians.

Each of the students was required to complete a written application and sit an interview with a panel of three judges. After the interview stage, students and their families had a dinner with the members of the Torquay Lions Club. At the dinner, students were asked two impromptu questions that made them think on their feet. The three of them all spoke amazingly, considering both the positive and negatives of A-I and who their role models are. The students then presented their 5-mintue prepared speeches.

Tobias K-B informed us on the scientific impact of geoengineering and how it is leading to the increase in global warming, but also how it could be part of the solution. Jetaime L shared heart-warming stories of how her grandfather’s hard work ethic and lack of materialism are the true definition of success and how the youth of today should consider what success looks like to them. Finally, Annabel D spoke from the heart about how for any one individual to feel connection and success, they need to understand their connection to other moving parts. She effectively utilised the analogy of a grand piano to explain the importance of teamwork in achieving success.

At the conclusion of the evening, the judges had a very difficult job to decide not only an overall winner but also a winner for the public speaking elements, and in the end it came down to a very small margin. We are extremely proud of all three participants

Congratulations to Annabel D for taking out both the interview section, and the impromptu and prepared speeches. Annabel will now represent the Torquay Club at the distract finals.
