Co-curricular - Junior Sport

In a year of World Cups, it has been great to see Australia taking centre stage. Even greater (especially to fathers of daughters) it has been the girls that have led the way. The Australian success started in the pool at Fukuoka and then jumped to the Diamonds in the netball in South Africa. Currently, the spotlight is on the Matildas in the football and the magnificent roller coaster ride they are on. Hopefully another victory is on the cards against the English. It is then on to the Basketball World Cup, the Rugby World Cup and finally the Cricket World Cup. We are certainly spoilt for choice in quality sport viewing this year.

There is a lot of talk at the moment about how inspiring these athletes and their performances are. Particularly the Matildas, who have gone further in the Football World Cup than any team before, men or women. The thought that spurs me on, and I hope our boys feel the same way, is that all these athletes were all once in the same position as our students. At one stage or another, all these athletes were school students, watching the feats of their heroes and wanting to be just like them. With focus, dedication and determination, opportunity will come knocking. Hopefully the inspiration runs deep and who knows, somewhere amongst our student body could be the next Socceroo, Wallaby or Australian representative.

A reminder that Cultural Co-curricular photos will be held after school on Monday 21 August. All boys should be aware of the times for their photos and have made arrangements for getting home. Boys will need to be attired in College Winter uniform; the blue cap will not be required for the photos.

Summer sport will recommence in the first week of Term 4. Boys are expected to fulfill their commitments from Term 1 and play for their teams. The Summer Sports Skills Program will once again be offered in Term 4 and will take place each Saturday morning at the College on SPC Oval 3. Boys wanting to participate are asked to please sign up at my office over the next week. Sign-up sheets will be available at the door.

Advanced warning of Junior School sport photos happening on Tuesday 12 September. Boys will need their playing uniforms for these photos and both Summer and Winter sports will have their photo taken. For Winter sports, head gear and mouthguards are not required, boots should be worn. Boys involved in squads will wear the College tracksuit pants and the Supporter’s polo shirt and boys involved in IPSHA CIS or NSW teams will have a photo in their representative gear or College tracksuit pants and black Supporter’s polo shirt.

I know there are many boys heading into semifinals and grand finals for their club teams. I wish all those involved the best of luck and I look forward to hearing of your results.
