Book Week
The joy of celebrating Book Week as a community is a wonderful experience that brings all of us together to celebrate the love of reading, storytelling, and the magic of books. This week has been no exception as we have embraced the theme READ Grow Inspire showing all facets of this throughout all classes.
Although an annual event, we as a College recognise the importance books bring to us on a daily basis. Encouraging the importance of growth in literacy skills, enriching lives through exploring our imagination and celebrating a shared passion for all that a book brings. Book Week acts as a reminder to all of us about the importance of having good literacy skills, reading regularly and connections through different genres.
Book Week honours the shared love for literature and fosters an exchange of thoughts, ideas and insights, acknowledging diversity and inclusivity through a recognition of different voices and experiences. Book Week at Mount Carmel College sparks creativity and this has been no more evident in our Book Week Door Display competition. A highly competitive and much sought after trophy across the Primary, perhaps even rivalling the FIFA Women's World Cup! Congratulations to Year 2 for securing the bragging rights as winners for 2023.
Finally, a huge thank you to our parents and carers who support so many of our initiatives at the College with Book Week being no exception. The time and energy put into sourcing an outfit is appreciated.
Arts Festival
Time is ticking on and the Mount Carmel College Arts Festival is just around the corner with it being celebrated on Friday 1 September. Staff are busily finalising art pieces, dramatic works, dance steps and musical items. A schedule is being finalised and will be sent home as soon as the last pieces of the puzzle are put together. In the meantime an EdSmart has gone out to all families and an additional one to our Early Years parent/carer body. If you have any worries or concerns please do not hesitate to contact your son or daughter’s classroom teacher.
School On Time
There are times when things happen in the morning or an appointment has to be made. But parents/carers are asked to recognise the importance of ensuring their son or daughter does arrive at school on time. Being on time allows for routines to be established, learning time maximised, a reduction in interruptions, full engagement and participation of the day ahead, building good habits, ensures students are prepared and organised for their day, develops respect for the role of the teacher, promotes the importance of social interaction, creates a positive environment and enhances student - teacher relationships.
Students are asked to be at school and in classrooms no later than 8:40am so that when the bell goes at 8:45am they are ready for their day.
Year 6 Trip to Canberra
Currently staff and students are preparing for their trip to Canberra which departs on Monday 18 September. As part of the build up to our trip the Year 6 team have been unpacking different aspects of what students will see when they visit Canberra. Bit by bit they are being exposed to information that will assist them whilst away. For example we have been delving deeply into the origin of the Magna Carta and how it has impacted us today. The role of the High Court and its function within our country and why we visit the Vietnam War Memorial and listen to a veteran of that war. This has allowed our students to get a brief understanding before actually visiting.
Parents of Year 6 students attending are asked to ensure that they have opened up the closed Facebook page that was recently sent. Those parents who do not do this will not be able to access any of the information that is currently being ‘drip fed’ on this site or any photos when the group is away. If you do not have access to Facebook and require further information leading up to the trip please do not hesitate to contact myself at the College.
Tournament of Minds
With only a couple of weeks to go before our TOM teams take to the ‘square’ to present their Challenge, rehearsals during school time have been exciting. As a Primary staff we are incredibly proud of our students' resilience, commitment and flexibility during this period and absolutely recognise that it is a busy time. Information about Saturday 9 September will be sent out soon as well as an invitation for all teams to stay behind on Friday 8 September to have a final run through and pizza party.
Primary Athletics
On Tuesday 12 September our Kinder - Year 6 students will take part in the Primary Athletics Carnival for 2023. Our amazing House Captains are already working on their House Meetings and further information about this day will be made available soon thanks to the HPE Department.
