From the Principal

We would like to acknowledge the original custodians of this land and waterways

and pay our respects to the Elders past and present and emerging,

for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Indigenous Australia.

Dear Families

We have come to the end of Term 3 and what a term it has been. So many activities have taken place with the children's learning that must be celebrated.  Our faith always underpins the theme and the unit of work for the term which is taken onboard. Our Catholic Social Teaching theme has been Participation and through the Media Arts curriculum this was made explicitly possible with the children being challenged to be creative in their work.

Student Voice, Democracy and building improvements

Over the last two weeks the girls have been involved with the selection of colours for the painting of the toilets.  They were given a variety of colour schemes to choose from and then the main colour theme was brought down to a few shades within the colour.

They independently voted for their preferred shade and the majority won with the colour for the main panels.

During the holidays there will be electrical works of more lighting, flooring replaced, toilet seats replaced, spouting and downpipes upgraded and painting undertaken so that the  girls and the boys' toilets are given a new lease of life.

There will also be resurfacing done from the Neerim Road gate entrance attached to the church, across the whole front area up unto the front office to enhance the entrance.

Playgroup

Our playgroup has been expanding each week and there is a nice group of parents and grandparents that come along with their children. At the moment there is a need for soft toys in good condition to be donated to the group for the young babies.  If you have any that you can donate this would be greatly appreciated.

We have some reminders for when we return in Term 4, especially as the weather becomes warmer.

SUN PROTECTION POLICY

Rationale

Too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can cause sunburn, skin damage, eye damage and skin cancer.

Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world, with two in three Australians developing some form of skin cancer during their lifetime. Overexposure to the sun during childhood and adolescence is known to be a major cause of skin cancer.

Our sun protection policy is followed from the beginning of September until the end of April and whenever the UV Index level reaches 3 and above*.

Objectives

The goals of the SunSmart Policy are to:

  • Increase student and community awareness about skin cancer and sun protection
  • Encourage the entire school community to use a combination of sun protection measures whenever UV Index levels reach 3 and above*
  • Work towards a safe school environment that provides shade for students, staff and the school community
  • Assist students to be responsible for their own sun protection
  • Ensure that families and new staff are informed of the school’s SunSmart policy

Our sun protection strategies

All children and staff use a combination of sun protection measures whenever the UV Index reaches 3 and above* to ensure they are well protected from the sun. Particular care is taken between 10 am and 2 pm (11 am and 3 pm daylight saving time) when UV Index levels reach their peak during the day.

Our SunSmart policy is considered when planning all outdoor events e.g. assemblies, camps, excursions and sporting events. Where possible, we have outdoor activities or events earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon, or we try using indoor venues.

Shade

  • The school council makes sure there is a sufficient number of shelters and trees providing shade in the school grounds particularly in areas where students congregate e.g. lunch, canteen, outdoor lesson areas and popular play areas.
  • In consultation with the school council, shade provision is considered in plans for future buildings and grounds.
  • The availability of shade is considered when planning excursions and all outdoor activities.
  • Children are encouraged to use available areas of shade when outside.
  • Children who do not have appropriate hats or outdoor clothing are asked to play in the shade or a suitable area protected from the sun.

I hope that everyone has the chance to relax and rejuvenate themselves over the holiday time. Please keep safe and take the time to celebrate your child's achievements this term.

Sincerely yours

Margaret Carlei
