Reading

This fortnight, Year 6 students have continued their novel study of Wonder. Students focused on making meaningful connections to the text, including text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world connections, helping them build deeper understanding and empathy for the characters and themes explored in the novel. We have also been developing independent note-taking skills while reading and using these notes to write chapter summaries. Students analysed what makes an effective summary, including identifying key events, important details and writing clearly and concisely. Wonder continues to provide valuable opportunities for discussion around kindness, inclusion, empathy and celebrating differences.

Writing

Our Year 6 students continued to explore objective and subjective language this fortnight. They then looked at how this can be used when understanding the purpose of recounts and the language we use when writing recounts. Students looked at time connectives and how to use this to add details into their writing.

Students also began to revise and edit their personal narratives and participated in a peer edit where peers read and provided suggested feedback on how they could improve their writing. We can’t wait to share these with you.

Students explored worded problems and converting measurements to save problems. They explored if doubling the perimeter affects the area. Students will use this knowledge next term, as they will continue to work on their understanding of measurements and shapes.

Throughout the project, students have been investigating both the physical and human geography of their chosen country, as well as exploring the country’s connection to Australia. Students also learned the importance of creating a bibliography to acknowledge the sources used in their research. To showcase their learning, students designed a visual component for their projects, choosing formats like dioramas, posters or brochures to creatively present their findings.
