Year 3 News

Reading

This fortnight in Reading, Year 3 students focused on making inferences. This means they learnt how to use clues from the text, along with their own knowledge and experiences, to work out information that is not directly stated in the text. Students practised identifying how characters might be feeling and why they were acting in certain ways. They also answered questions that encouraged them to "read between the lines" and explain their thinking using evidence from the text.

“I learned about we need to use clues and prior knowledge” - Zareen 3A

“I learnt that inference is easy when you practice alot” - Eliz 3A“ We learnt about characters emotions” Ivaan 3B“ An inference is when you use clues from the book” - Niyara 3B

Writing

This fortnight in Writing, Year 3 students focused on identifying past, present and future tense verbs in sentences. They learnt how verbs change to show when an action has happened, is happening, or will happen. Students practised finding and using these verbs correctly in their own writing.

Students also explored explanation texts and wrote about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling. They learnt how to organise information clearly and use facts to explain how these actions help to protect our environment. It has been wonderful to see students developing their grammar skills while creating informative and purposeful pieces of writing.

Maths

This fortnight, the Year 3 cohort has been exploring time and learning how to read analogue clocks. They began by identifying the features of a clock, including the short hand (hour hand) and long hand (minute hand). Students also learned that there are 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day, making connections to AM and PM.

Using mini clocks, students practised reading and showing o'clock and half-past times before progressing to quarter past and quarter to. The students particularly enjoyed the challenge of learning quarter past and quarter to, and demonstrated great persistence as they developed their understanding of these more complex time concepts.

“My favourite part about the clock was when we did half past” - Ava 3A

“There are many different times” - Amy 3A“ When the minute hand points to the 6, it is half past” - Haydar 3B“ When the long hand points to the 9 it is quarter to” - David 3B“ We drew clocks in our book and it was kind of hard to make them circles” - saskia 3B

Inquiry

This fortnight, the Year 3 students have continued to work on their Inquiry Projects. Throughout this term, they have developed their knowledge and understanding of Australia’s neighbouring countries, building powerful research skills and expanding their awareness of the world around them.

Students have now been using their knowledge and inquiry skills to independently or collaboratively research a neighbouring country of their choice. They have been gathering important information and exploring different aspects of their chosen country.

The students have begun transferring their research onto posters, showcasing their creativity and understanding. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm, effort, and attention to detail as their projects continue to develop

Social and Emotional Learning / SWPBS

This fortnight, students are exploring and celebrating the diversity within our school community. Through discussions and activities, they are learning that families, cultures, traditions, and experiences can be different and that these differences make our community stronger. The focus is on building empathy, respect, and an appreciation for the unique qualities that make each person and family special.

AUSLAN

Over the last fortnight, the Year 3 students have been learning about medical signs and finger spelling in Auslan. Students have been developing their confidence in using finger spelling and have been putting their skills into practise by revising a range of topics they have learned throughout the year. This has included signing animals, objects found around the house, and other familiar vocabulary.

Special Events

Pyjama day

In Week 8, students had the opportunity to come to school in their pyjamas to celebrate Pyjama Day. It was wonderful to see the whole school dressed in their cosy sleepwear and embracing the fun spirit of the day.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the celebrations, including delicious hot jam doughnuts and juice. There were plenty of smiles throughout the day, and it was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect with their peers and enjoy a special school experience together.

“ I enjoyed wearing my Pjs” Aliyah 3B“ I was cosy” Nimrah 3B

3A Attendance

At CPS, attendance is a major focus as we want to see students at school every day whenever possible. Regular attendance supports students' learning, helps them build strong social connections, and ensures they don't miss out on valuable classroom experiences.

To encourage positive attendance habits, the students in 3A have been working towards filling an Attendance Jar. Each morning, after the roll was marked, if our class attendance was 90% or higher, we added a star to the jar.

We are excited to share that our Attendance Jar is now full! The students were rewarded for their collective effort and commitment to coming to school ready to learn
