Year 2 News

Reading

In Reading during week 8 and 9, students continued to focus on identifying the main idea of a text. They practised reading Non-fiction texts and thinking about what the story was mostly about, using important pages from the text including the contents page, subheadings and diagrams to help them determine the main message or big idea of the text. Students then look at both types of genres to compare the different ways to identify the Main Idea of the texts.

In Phonics over the past 2 weeks, students have focused on spelling words containing the 'ou' and 'ow' sounds.(Like in: clown, frown, cloud, bound) They practised identifying the number of sounds in words, listening for and identifying individual sounds, building words using sound cards, and reading words with increasing accuracy and confidence. These activities helped students strengthen their understanding of sound-letter relationships and develop their reading and spelling skills.

This fortnight in writing the students have been learning about the conjunctions ‘before’ and ‘after’ and how they can order events in a compound sentence. They have practiced writing these sentences on whiteboards and then been trying their best to include them in their extended pieces of writing in their books.

Also, the students have been writing explanation texts. They have used a plan to explain why they wear different clothes in each season. The students have also had the opportunity to use a laptop to learn some typing skills and have published their explanation text by typing it onto a Word document.

Inquiry

This fortnight in Inquiry, the students came together for two lessons and there were some exciting, expert guest speakers from Year 3. The Year 3 students came and shared their knowledge about the aboriginal calendar, how there are more than four seasons, what the different seasons are called and the students also learnt how Aboriginal people use the environment to tell what season it is. It was great to see all the students working together and mixing with students from other grades. They were very creative and made a spinning wheel that had the four European seasons that we know and follow on one side and then the other side had the seven seasons from the Aboriginal calendar they had been learning about.

Social and Emotional Learning / SWPBS

In SEL, Year 2 students continued working on their littering posters. They were very enthused that their posters would be displayed to support other students in the school. Some students also went to the Foundation and Year 1 classrooms to encourage these students to eat in the canteen area and dispose of their rubbish in the bins. Students also focused on being responsible and taking ownership of their own actions. They discussed the importance of telling the truth, apologising, fixing problems and learning from mistakes to make better choices next time.

In SWPBS, students have been following the Respectful Relationships lessons. The focus for this fortnight was understanding who the best person is, to seek help from in different situations. Year 2 students also explored the idea that they may be approached by others who are in need of help. They discussed the best ways to respond, including listening carefully, showing kindness, and encouraging the person to speak to a trusted adult when needed.

In Auslan, Year 2 students participated in a lesson where they were learning about medical signs. Students noticed that some of the signs look like what they represent, such as nurse hat for nurses, and revolving lights for ambulances. Some of the other signs students explored were hospital, medicine, headache and Doctor. Afterwards, students engaged in a mime game and acted out some of the signs.
