Year 1 News

Reading
In Reading during Week 8, students had the chance to express their personal preference for a range of texts. This involved students explaining why they liked or disliked a text and identifying their favourite parts. Students also had the chance to rate each text out of 5 stars or smiley faces to show their personal preference. It was great to see students expressing their likes and dislikes for a variety of texts.
During Week 9, the Year 1 students focussed on creating alternative endings for a range of texts. This sparked their creativity and encouraged them to think outside the box. Students enjoyed creating their own endings to the stories read.

Writing
This fortnight, Year 1 students have been exploring different types of poetry and developing their creativity as writers.
They enjoyed creating acrostic poems, where each letter of a word became the beginning of a new line. They carefully selected nouns, verbs and adjectives to describe animals.
Students were also introduced to cinquain poems, a simple five-line poetry structure. Students experimented with using describing words, action words, and feelings to create poems that painted vivid pictures in the reader's mind.

Maths
During Maths in Week 8 students have continued to explore the concept of sharing objects. They have used hands-on materials to practise sharing and have had the chance to consolidate their learning through using these hands-on materials.
In week 9 students explored the Months of the year, duration and calendars. They learnt the order of the months of the year, learnt how to use a calendar and differentiated between days, months, weeks and years. It was great to see students engaged in their learning and building on their prior knowledge.

Inquiry
This fortnight, Year 1 students have been exploring the different features that make up places and environments. As part of our Inquiry unit, students investigated natural, managed, and constructed features. To consolidate their learning, students created their own landscape dioramas using recycled materials. They thoughtfully designed and built miniature environments, identifying and including natural features such as mountains, rivers, and trees; managed features such as farms, gardens, and parks; and constructed features such as roads, bridges, and buildings.

Social and Emotional Learning / SWPBS
This fortnight, our Year 1 students have been exploring the concepts of growth mindset and help-seeking. Students learned that challenges and mistakes are important parts of learning. Through discussions, stories, and classroom activities, they explored the idea of the "power of yet", recognising that while they may not be able to do something now, they can improve through effort, practise, and perseverance.
They also focused on the important skill of help-seeking. Students discussed when and how to ask for help, identified trusted adults and peers who can support them, and practised using respectful and confident language to seek assistance when needed. These lessons have encouraged students to become more resilient learners, build confidence in tackling challenges, and understand that asking for help is a positive strategy that supports learning and wellbeing.

AUSLAN
This fortnight, students have been learning AUSLAN signs for a variety of household appliances and electrical items found around the home. Our vocabulary focus included lamp, heater, charger, dishwasher, vacuum, fan, kettle, rice cooker, iron, clothes dryer, and hairdryer.
Students practised recognising, signing, and naming these items through interactive games, matching activities, and conversations. They developed their confidence in using AUSLAN to communicate about everyday objects and explored how these appliances help us in our daily lives.
