STEM

In STEM this Term our grade 5/6 students voted to focus on fossils and microbiology. We delved into the world of fossil excavation last week with a hands-on learning task that required students to excavate chocolate chips out of cookies. They were tasked with the job of mapping their cookie on a grid, locating their chocolate chips and marking the coordinates. The students with the most chips and cleanest excavation were awarded a prize at the end. The students had such a fun time participating in this activity, especially the part where they got to eat their cookie crumbs and chocolate chips! This task, although edible in the classroom, links with real world excavation practises that use grid mapping and chiselling to careful recover fossils and artefacts.

In Prep- Grade 4, students voted to learn about coding and robotics, with the junior years working on Scratch Jnr and creating obstacle courses for BeeBots. While the 3/4s have been making their own creations in Scratch as well as exploring the Lego spike kits to build programable robots.

How can you engage in your child’s learning at home?

Ask your child about the activity and what the learnt about fossil excavation.

What do archaeologists do when digging around mice burrows to avoid contamination?

What have you been enjoying doing in STEM?

Can you explain what coding is?
