Reading & Writing
Last week, we completed our Term 4 novel study of Hatchet. We were all relieved when Brian was finally rescued from the Canadian wilderness, and we shared a smile at the final line of the book, where Brian invites his rescuer to join him for a meal.
This week, students drew on their knowledge of survival from the text, along with their understanding of the PEPS persuasive structure (Point, Explanation, Proof, Summary), to plan and write persuasive pieces about the three most important things you would need to survive in the wilderness. Students carefully selected their three items and justified their choices using evidence and reasoning.
Word Work
Over the past two weeks, we have been learning about the Latin base dic/dict, which means say, tell or proclaim. Students explored words such as vindicate, dictate, verdict and indicate, discussing how prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of the root. They also began applying this understanding when reading and writing new vocabulary.

Over the next fortnight, we will be focusing on reading and writing sentences and paragraphs using a consistent tense. Students will continue to monitor and develop their reading fluency through both Fluency Pairs and DIBELS reading assessments.
In Word Work, we will complete our study of words containing the Latin base dic/dict (meaning say/tell/proclaim) and then move on to a new base: geo, meaning earth.
➗ Maths
This fortnight, we completed our unit on fractions, including comparing and ordering fractions, identifying fractions of a set and a shape, and accurately locating fractions on a number line. Students learnt that fractions represent parts of a whole and can be written as proper fractions, improper fractions, mixed numbers, and in decimal form.
We also began our unit on decimals, learning about place value to the tenths and hundredths, and how to divide a number line into equal parts to represent these decimal values.
During our Applied Maths sessions, students explored measurement, comparing and ordering objects by mass and capacity, and using measurement tools to find the mass or capacity of everyday items in the classroom.

Over the next few weeks, students will continue their learning on decimals and will complete several end-of-year assessments to track growth and understanding. In Applied Maths, we will begin our next unit on angles.
🧠 Knowledge-Rich Units
This week, we were super excited to begin our Knowledge-Rich unit on Vikings! The students have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the similarities and differences between life as a Viking in 700 CE and life today. We learnt about where and when the Vikings lived and even practised writing our names using Viking runes.
Over the coming weeks, we will explore what it meant to “go a’viking”, examine the design and features of Viking ships, and learn how the Vikings travelled, traded, explored and raided across Northern Europe.
