Learning in Action
đ Literacy
Over the past fortnight, the Grade 3s have been deeply engaged in our continued reading of The One and Only Ivan. Students eagerly discussed their ideas with one another, building a strong understanding of key themes, characters, and events. Their enthusiasm was clear as they explored how the author uses literary devices and language features to influence the readerâs thinking and emotions.
Â
Students also continued to develop their understanding of persuasive text structures. They began forming and writing their opinions about whether animals should be kept in captivity, using evidence from the text to support their viewpoints.

Over the next fortnight, students will continue reading The One and Only Ivan and expanding their understanding of literary devices and new vocabulary. They will further explore the key features of persuasive letters and begin drafting a persuasive piece arguing why animal captivity is harmful, particularly within circuses.
â Maths
This fortnight, students completed a probability unit, focusing on identifying the likelihood of events occurring and conducting chance experiments. Students first revised key chance vocabulary, including impossible, unlikely, likely, and certain, and placed a range of events along a continuum to show how likely they were to occur.
Â
Students then worked individually and with partners to carry out chance experiments, such as flipping a coin, selecting counters from a hat, and rolling a six-sided die. They recorded their results in tally tables and compared outcomes. Through discussion, students recognised that while some events have equal possible outcomes (e.g., heads or tails when flipping a coin), the actual results may vary. To explore this further, each class combined student data to create a whole-class graph showing the collective results of the coin-toss experiment.

Over the next fortnight, students will work through two shorter units: Money and Angles. Next week, they will revise their understanding of Australian coins and notes and practise ordering them by value. Students will then move on to adding collections of money and calculating change using counting-up strategies.
đşď¸ Knowledge Rich Unit
Over the past fortnight, the Grade 3s have continued their exploration of The Birth of Democracy in Ancient Greece. Students learnt about a range of ancient Greek myths, including Persephone and the Underworld and The Twelve Labours of Heracles. We defined a myth as a story people told long ago to explain aspects of life, such as the weather, love, war and nature.
Â
Students discussed what these stories reveal about Ancient Greek culture and citizenship, identifying values such as bravery, clever thinking, perseverance and teamwork. They reflected on how these values helped shape the identity and beliefs of Ancient Greek society.

To conclude this unit, students will complete a written assessment outlining the differences between Sparta and Athens, the types of government in Ancient Greece, and the virtues illustrated in The Labours of Heracles.
Wellbeing
Over the past fortnight, Grade 3 students have been exploring gender roles and stereotypes through a range of engaging activities. Acting as âfairy tale detectivesâ, students listened to Little Red Riding Hood and The Paper Bag Princess, analysing the roles of girls, boys, women and men in each story. Together, they discussed the messages these texts can send to readers about gender expectations and how stories can shape our ideas about what people should be like.

Looking ahead, students will continue to explore gender stereotypes by brainstorming gifts they might choose for baby Rosewarneâconsidering options for both a boy and a girl. They will also analyse current toy advertisements and discuss how the media can influence the choices we make and the expectations we have for both boys and girls.

PJ Day
The students had a wonderful time dressing up in their cosy pyjamas for our PJ Dress-Up Day, organised by the SVC in collaboration with the Green Team. Students brought in gold coin donations to help raise money for a new recycling bin for used whiteboard markers. Thank you to everyone who contributed!
