📖 Literacy

Over the past fortnight in Literacy, the Grade 2 students have completed their unit on the text The Snail and the Whale. Throughout the unit, students learnt new vocabulary, explored narrative text elements, and studied the structure and features of poetry. We also read the poem Be a Friend by Edgar Albert Guest, which focuses on the theme of kindness and what it means to be a friend. The students then learnt how to innovate a poem – that is, to change parts of an existing poem to make it their own.

Within our Literature unit, students have also been learning about sentence-level writing features, such as possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns, as well as text-level writing features, including writing a narrative with a clear beginning, middle and end. The students analysed the structure and vocabulary of a poem to support them in writing their own creative versions.

Preview: In Week 5 and moving into Week 6, the Grade 2 students will be demonstrating their understanding of the sentence-level writing concepts we have covered throughout the semester.

Knowledge Rich

This fortnight, the Grade 2 students have been super excited to delve into their next Knowledge-Rich unit on Ancient China. We began our learning by exploring two significant rivers that had a major impact on the development of Ancient Chinese civilisation – the Huang He (Yellow River) and the Yangtze River. Students learnt that the flooding of the Huang He helped farmers grow crops, and that both the rivers and canals allowed people to travel and transport food to cities.

We then explored the importance of family and ancestors in Ancient China, including how people honoured their ancestors through offerings and festivals. Students particularly enjoyed creating cards and letters to honour their own family and ancestors.

Finally, we learnt about the teachings of Confucius, who believed people should treat one another with kindness and virtue. The students engaged thoughtfully with this idea and discussed what kindness looks like in our everyday lives.

Preview - Stay tuned for photos of our virtual reality incursion! We will also be learning about writing in the Chinese language, key Chinese inventions, and how silk is made.

➗ Maths

Last week, we began a new Maths unit focusing on place value with four-digit numbers. This built on our earlier learning about three-digit place value, so the students were excited to take their understanding a step further! Students practised representing four-digit numbers in a variety of ways, including using a place value chart, MAB, a Gattegno chart, and a number line. They also practised comparing and ordering numbers using the ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ symbols.

We then developed our skills in rounding four-digit numbers—first rounding to the nearest ten, and then to the nearest hundred.

😊Wellbeing

Last Friday, the students and teachers came to school very cosy in their pyjamas! This special day helped us raise money for our new recycling bins for textas, pens and markers. Thank you for supporting our sustainability efforts!

4Rs

In Wellbeing, during our Positive Gender Relations topic, students have begun learning about gender-based violence and how the opposite of this is respect. Students explored different scenarios and identified examples of both respectful behaviour and behaviour that shows a lack of respect.
