Our Grade 4 students proudly took to the stage at this week’s assembly to share the wonderful sustainability projects happening across the Junior School as part of our Waa’s Helpers program, reflecting on the year that we have had.
This year, students have been working hard to care for the environment and learn more about sustainability, particularly biodiversity. One of their favourite projects has been growing the school veggie garden, and it’s thriving. The broad beans, tomatoes and coriander have been growing beautifully, even through the winter months. Students planted the seeds themselves and were thrilled to see them sprout and grow strong. Some even got to take their broad beans home. Through this experience, students learned that with patience, care and teamwork, amazing things can grow.
The students also shared highlights from their Sustainability Scavenger Hunt, which had them racing around the school looking for examples of sustainable practices. It was not only fun but a fantastic way to learn about how we can all take care of our environment while working together as a team.
They gave a special shoutout to the Year 9 students from the Kindness Collective, who regularly support the program. Their guidance and encouragement have reminded everyone just how important kindness is, both in caring for each other and for the planet.
Another exciting project was taking part in the 100 Trees Program, where students planted native trees to increase biodiversity and show respect for Country. By planting native species, students learned how these plants help create habitats for local animals and insects.
To spread their message even further, Waa’s Helpers created a video and script about how to look after the environment, highlighting that small actions like planting seeds or reducing waste can make a big difference.
The group meets every second Tuesday, and all Grade 3 and 4 students are welcome to join. If you’re interested, speak to Ms Koomen or our Junior School Environmental Captains, Youyou and Asha, to get involved.
Together, our young environmental leaders are showing that caring for the planet can be fun, inspiring and deeply rewarding.
