Year 5 Newsletter

And we are off and running!

A very warm welcome to everyone for the beginning of what is set to be a busy Term 4. Year 5 students have settled in well upon returning to school this week and we are looking forward to a productive and positive term ahead. Term 4 is jam packed with learning, assessments, reports, transition, SLIP, Survivor Day, Big Day Out and whole school events, such as the Christmas singalong.

In Inquiry, students are diving into Pop Culture throughout the eras. Students are very keen to learn about what major events, music, movies, and fashion Australians loved throughout the different decades. The rest of the school will be wondering what’s going on, as the Year 5 classrooms have been buzzing with the sound of big band jazz this week!

This term, our literacy program continues to support the development of students’ knowledge of morphemes and grammar skills, as well as giving students the opportunity to delve into the world of poetry and information report writing. During the first week, students have been exploring how to write different types of poems, including Quatrain (Rhyming), Free Verse and Cinquain Poetry.

In Mathematics, we have been very busy learning about Mass. Students have loved estimating and using scales to measure the mass of objects within our classrooms. Luckily the sun is out, as soon we will be exploring Volume and Capacity, which includes getting messy with water play!

Our SLIP program starts next week! SLIP aims to tap into students’ leadership potential through weekly activities and discussions about understanding the impact their leadership, both individually and as a year group, can have on their school and their peers; identifying the qualities of a good leader and recognising their own strengths; and improving their sense of self and enhancing their confidence in order to take on challenges such as public speaking.

Again, this semester we are lucky to have Mrs. Pierce for Library. Please remember to return any overdue items, so your child is still able to borrow each week.

Please remember that Term 4 requires students to wear a hat when outside in the yard. Any student that is not wearing a hat will need to stay undercover in the shade.

Finally, you are now able to order Year 6 hoodies and polo shirts for next year. Next week we will have samples available outside the Year 5 rooms on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 8:30 and 8:50 for you to check sizing. Remember, it may be a good idea to order a slightly larger size to accommodate any growth spurts over the Christmas holiday period.
