Year 4 Newsletter
Dear parents,
Congratulations to all ENPS students who participated in the regional athletics on Wednesday. We are super proud of you for representing our school at such a high level.
What's happened in year 4 this week?
English – This week we have continued our novel study! While reading, Matilda by Roald Dahl, students engage in daily reviews, where they practise word-level reading, explore morphology and vocabulary and have the opportunity to build their understanding of grammar. Through independent, choral and partner reading, students work on their fluency. Our text-level writing will focus on students producing well-structured narratives linked with text features discussed in the novel, Matilda.
Maths – This week and also next week, students have been investigating ‘Location’. We have created and interpreted grid reference systems using grid references and directions to locate and describe positions and pathways. We are also solving problems involving the duration of ‘Time’. This week we have discussed what we know about time and have made our own clocks to be used in future lessons.
Inquiry - We have investigated where Africa and South America are on the world map and then delved deeper into the characteristics of the continent of Africa.
This week, we have also introduced our ‘at home project’ that each student is required to complete. With your help, students have been asked to choose an African or South American Country they would like to research. They need to discuss their choice with their teacher before the end of week 3 (by Thursday 24th October). Next week, we will send home a checklist and full project details so students can get started with their research.
Wellbeing - This week in wellbeing the students have plotted a range of problems on a scale, understanding some problems are small and some are serious. One way we try to stop some of these problems from happening is to have rules. But we also need helping hands and people who will take action when things go wrong, or when the safety or learning rules are broken.
Homework:
- Minimum 4 nights reading with at least 80 minutes per week recorded in school diary (Book title, pages read, minutes read).
- Diary is to be brought to school each Friday signed by parents.
- Mathletics tasks will be optional whilst students are completing the ‘at home project’. We will set tasks weekly to support topics in the classroom. Certificates will be awarded for those choosing to complete the tasks.
Important Reminders:
- Whiteboard Erasers - We use our mini whiteboards very often and have noticed that many students have lost/misplaced their whiteboard erasers. Would you please check that your child has one of their own, and if not we would greatly appreciate it if you could purchase them a new one.
- Inquiry Celebration - Please provide payment and consent via Compass
- Hats - please ensure your child has a school appropriate ‘sun smart’ hat.
