Year 3 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Welcome back - can you believe we are in the final term of Year 3, 2024!?

This term is going to be a busy, but exciting one. We have so much to look forward to.

This week in:

Literacy

Our Science of Reading focus has been on revising suffixes (s/es/ves/, ing, ed & ful) to a word, using the 1.1.1 and 2.1.1 rule to help us. Ask your child to explain what those rules mean!

Our comprehension focus has been ‘Making Connections’ in text. We spoke about making ‘text-to-self ’and ‘text-to-world’ connections, and how these assist us with understanding what we are reading.

Our genre focus this term is Information Text. We have looked at the key features of an information text, investigated notetaking vs direct copying, and begun researching information on a chosen Country in partners.

Our grammar focus has been on revisiting the difference between common and proper nouns. I.e., the common noun is teacher, the proper noun is Mr. Georges, Hayley or Miss Levacic!

Mathematics

This term will see us covering a number of topics in short units. We have looked at Statistics & Probability these past two weeks, and will be moving on to our final topics for this term over the coming weeks; Fractions, Time &  Shape.

Over the term we will be completing a range of online assessments tasks to assist us in gauging the level of understanding of each student. This will cover the learning over the year, and guide us with our reporting.

Inquiry

This term we are learning about Festivals & Celebrations. Students have been busy working in groups to research and present information on a Personal or World Celebration.

Later this term students will be exploring some of the famous Festivals & Celebrations from around the world (Diwali, Abu Simbel, Chinese New Year, etc.) through some Year Level rotations.

Wellbeing

This term we continue with our Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program. This week we began exploring ‘Help Seeking’, looking at factors that contribute to positive relationships and building our effective communication skills.

Important Information

Oral Presentation

This term the students will be completing an Oral Presentation linked to our Inquiry topic - Festivals & Celebrations.

We have spoken about this in detail, and have encouraged the students to get a start on it as soon as possible. The due date of this assignment is Monday 25th November.

The outline of the task is available on Google Classroom.

Homework

We are asking for a minimum of 80 minutes of reading a week at home that needs to be logged into their diaries each night.

We will also be setting 3 Tasks on Mathletics for the students to complete throughout the week. These will become available Friday afternoons.

We kindly ask that you email your class teacher, or send a note, if your child is unable to complete their homework by Friday morning.

Reminders

Camp:

Specific information regarding camp will be communicated soon.

A friendly reminder to complete the online Dietary form sent by ADANAC as soon as possible. The form must be submitted - there is a button at the bottom for you to select.

Please head over to our Compass Event and provide payment and consent for your child.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding camp, please contact your classroom teacher and make time to sit and discuss this.

Hats, Sunscreen & Water Bottles

Term Four is a ‘No Hat, No Play’ term. Please ensure your child has a clearly named school hat for outside learning and play.

Sunscreen needs to be applied before school. Students can reapply their own or use our class sunscreen before going out to lunch. Please let me know if your child is allergic to our school based sunscreen.

Drink Bottles - please make sure your child has a drink bottle with a pop top or folding straw as our drinking taps are currently turned off. Drink bottles that you drink out of like a glass or disposable plastic often cause spillages.
