Mathematics

Throughout Term Four, students will engage with Ochre Education’s high-quality curriculum resources aligned to the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. These lessons incorporate effective teaching practices such as explicit instruction, checking for understanding, retrieval, and spaced practise. We are excited to introduce these resources into our classrooms to enhance student learning.
Early in the term, students will focus on Data and Statistics, exploring how data is collected and analysed in everyday life to make informed decisions, predict outcomes, measure performance, and solve problems. They will collect their own data and learn how to select appropriate graphs and charts to represent their findings. Students will practise constructing graphs manually and digitally using tools like Excel, and they will develop skills in interpreting graphs and tables to draw meaningful conclusions from the data.
Later in the term, students will explore Patterns and Algebra, with an emphasis on real-life applications. They will work on contextualising expressions and equations to understand their practical uses, and they will use visual representations to help make connections to unknown values. This focus on real-world examples will deepen their understanding of algebraic concepts.

How can you support your child’s Mathematics learning at home?
- Involve your child in analysing simple data sets, such as household budgets or weather patterns.
- Encourage your child to create and interpret different types of graphs, such as bar or line graphs.
- Discuss how data is used to make decisions in everyday life, such as during elections or in sports.
