Year 1 Spotlight

In Year 1, things have been going swimmingly! We’ve been learning all about habitats in our Inquiry lessons, investigating how different animals have adapted to survive in their unique environments. To showcase understanding, students designed and created dioramas to represent different habitats. They then practised their speaking skills by presenting their dioramas to the class. We’re all looking forward to our upcoming excursion to the Aquarium, where we’ll have the chance to see underwater habitats up close!

Habitats have also been the focus of a recent writing lesson sequence, where we’ve been learning to write information reports. In a separate sequence, we’ve focused on word choice, emphasising the use of vivid verbs to make our writing more precise and engaging. Mentor texts like Bubbles Up by Jacqueline Davies – where characters “burst,” “shoot,” and “zoom” through the water – and Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley by Aaron Blabey – where one character likes to run “amok” – helped us explore how experienced authors bring stories to life with action words. Students then practised incorporating vivid verbs into their own writing.

In Maths, we were excited to revisit our money topic, where we practised ordering notes and coins, calculating costs, and working out change. We’ve also been learning about sharing, division, subtraction, skip counting, and quantifying groups of objects. Through drawing, using manipulatives, and writing number sentences, we’ve gained confidence in our skills while having a lot of fun along the way.

It’s been wonderful to see Year 1 students engage thoughtfully with their learning this semester. We’re looking forward to more great learning in the weeks ahead.
