Jamie Sharp

Term 4 has started really well. Students have been engaged in high quality learning as well as embracing a variety of excursions and incursions. This has included swimming, Bike Education, trips to the Old Treasury building and Legoland among other things.

Student learning

Our focus on high quality student learning continues to be evident in the day to day operations of the school. Last week I was presented persuasive texts in a Year 3 grade about Why Somerville Primary School is the best. The students provided compelling points with justification to back up their positive stance.

A day earlier students in a different Grade 3 class were discussing how to socially interact with one and other and the roles each person plays when social challenges may occur. This was to reiterate how, as humans, we will have a difference of opinion at times, and how we can respectfully interact with one and other.

Both skill sets are vital in a school setting to help grow our academic and social development. This something I continue to see and promote in all classrooms.

Staffing

We have had some movement with regards to staffing since our last newsletter. Courtney Sinacola has taken on the role of Art and the students have been fully engaged with a range of designs and craft.

Bianca Burton and Paige Peters begun at the start of the term as education support and have fitted in engaging with students and staff.

Chris Williams is currently on family leave and last week he and his wife introduced Kaio to the world. I’m sure on his return there will be photos shared with the class and staff.

Jo Dewar has accepted a full-time position at Monash Health and this commences after Melbourne Cup Day. I would like to thank Jo for her time at Somerville PS.

Covered Outdoor Learning Area

We had a meeting on Monday this week with the contractors Ducon, the Victorian Schools Building Authority and the architect for the cover going over the basketball area. There have been delays and a date to start the project is yet to be determined. We will update you when we have more information.

2025 Classes

We are in the process of organising classes for 2025. Many hours are spent by all staff in determining the classes. We use a range of measures including student requests, academic levels, social interactions and professional judgement to find a mix that embraces, engages and challenges each student to grow.

Requests by parents and carers are considered when forming the grades. If you would like to submit a request please send it in writing to somerville.ps@education.vic.gov.au prior to 4pm on Friday 8th November 2024. Please note that all requests will be considered but may not be guaranteed.

Support for Parents

As you may be aware the School Saving Bonus (SSB) program is being introduced this year to support students for 2025. Families who have children attending our school in 2025 will receive an email in November providing you access to the SSB portal.

Linked here is more information of what the $400 one off payment is to cover https://www.vic.gov.au/school-saving-bonus.

Another resource that I have recently come across is the Triple P (Positive Parenting Program). This is free program that can support families in assisting children in today’s world with effective strategies. This can be accessed via this link https://www.vic.gov.au/triple-p-positive-parenting-program#program-description.
