So, you think you can Count- Year 3/4 Virtual incursion with John Monash Tech school

Twenty of Solway's mini mathematicians virtually joined the teachers at John Monash Tech school and other schools around Victoria, on Friday 8 November to share in some challenging Maths puzzles.

Max G, Sophie W and Clara- “The puzzles were fun and tricky at the same time. We got to think openly and see how many answers we could reach by accepting our own level of challenge. One task was to count how many squares on a page using algebra and perfect squares. Another task was to work out if lockers would be open or closed. We got on the floor and made a model before we saw a pattern. It changed the perspective of how you could solve a problem. It was fun working with other schools, connecting and seeing how they solved problems.

Count like a Computer – Year 5/6 Virtual Incursion with John Monash Tech School

Twenty of Solway’s bigger mathematicians virtually joined the teachers at John Monash Tech school and other schools around Victoria, on Friday 8 November to share in some challenging Maths puzzles looking at using modular arithmetic.

Mila: “Count like a computer was fun and challenging. We went up to the conference room and started learning. I didn’t get it at first, but by the end I had understood it almost perfectly!”

Blas: “We had to count more like a clock than a computer. It was honestly great fun. The last worksheet that included fractions and modular arithmetic was the most challenging.’

Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series, Maths Games – Year 5/6 Virtual Incursion

Colin, Matilda T and Julian: “Solway had 4 teams of 4, participating in the VCES Maths games day.  We had to compete in games and puzzles with time limits attached. We were given points for how developed our answers were. It was mostly a test of teamwork, and we wouldn’t have been able to do it by ourselves. The puzzles involved a lot of critical thinking and were all very different. It was really fun, and we would certainly recommend this to other students. All Solway’s teams finished in the top 50. Solway’s top team came in 13th place of 400 teams. The second Solway team came 27th of 400!

Ameyaa: “I enjoyed the math games day because it was fun, and I liked working with other people.”
