The Learning Zone

MaST

The Maths space has been a busy place at SMOTA this term. All students in Years 1-6 completed their PAT M assessment in the last few weeks with some wonderful growth occurring. It reinforces how hard our young people are working alongside our skilled helpful adults to build their capacity and create numerate students for a hope-filled future.

Early Stage 1 has had lots of fun this term learning about multiplication, length and division. They have been using lots of hands on activities and concrete materials to support their understanding. They have learnt about distributing objects to create groups, identifying if groups are equal or not and using drawings, words and numerals to explain their thinking. All of ES1 have made incredible growth in the Maths space this year and we are so proud of their progress.

Stage 1 is exploring data and are creating a range of surveys to collect data that they can analyse. To support them in this task, they visited each classroom this week to ask all students their generated questions for their surveys. It was fantastic to see the students putting their new skills into practice whilst also being supported by older students in the process. Stage 1 has also been strengthening their understanding of Division and having lots of fun using Numicon to support their learning.

This term, Stage 2 students have been diving into exciting mathematical concepts, building their skills and confidence. Students have been learning how to read, write, and compare decimal numbers, understanding their real-world applications in measurements and currency. Through hands-on activities, they’ve practiced measuring objects using both standard and non-standard units, converting between units, and solving problems involving length. Students have also been sharpening their ability to read analogue and digital clocks, calculate time intervals, and connect these skills to daily life.

What are the chances that Stage 3 is kicking learning goals? If you look at their recent unit on chance the probability would be extremely likely. From creating their own chance experiments, exploring random generators and making their own , to using Minecraft to go fishing and explore the probability of the number of fish in an area Stage 3 have done it all recently. The mathematical thinking and justification that has occurred within this unit has been outstanding with all students continuously achieving their learning goals and continuously rising to challenges.
