This Sunday, we begin the beautiful and reflective season of Advent. Advent, which comes from the Latin word adventus meaning "coming," is a time of preparation and waiting for the celebration of Jesus' birth at Christmas. It is also a time to reflect on His eventual second coming and our readiness to welcome Him into our hearts and lives.
During Advent, we are invited to be examples of kindness, generosity, and love, modeling the virtues of patience and joy for our children. We can teach them that Advent is not just about counting down to Christmas, but about preparing ourselves spiritually for the gift of Christ.
This is a busy season, often filled with the hustle and bustle of shopping, decorating, and attending festive events. While these traditions are joyful, let us remember and share with our children the deeper meaning behind them. Putting up a Christmas tree, for example, can remind us of the tree of life and the everlasting love of God. The lights we string on our homes can symbolise Christ as the Light of the World, guiding us through the darkness.
However, Advent is not always a season of happiness for everyone. For some, this time may bring a sense of loss or longing - the empty chair at the table, the memory of loved ones who are no longer with us, or the heavy heart of caring for an ill family member. It is important to recognise and share the message of hope and comfort that Advent brings. We can show compassion to those who may find this season challenging and remind them that Christ’s love offers healing and peace.
As families, let us make time to pray together, share stories of hope and love, and give to those in need. Acts of kindness, whether big or small, can remind us of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Encourage your children to think of ways they can bring joy to others - whether by helping at home, sharing with friends, or showing compassion to someone in need.
Advent is a chance to slow down, reflect, and prepare. As we light each candle on the Advent wreath, may we be reminded of the hope, peace, joy, and love that Christ brings to the world. Let us embrace this season as a time to grow closer to God and to each other.
Wishing all families a blessed and meaningful Advent. May it bring comfort to those who need it most and joy to those who can share it.
Every blessing,

Advent
As we light the first candle on the Advent wreath this Sunday, we are reminded of the beautiful gift of hope. Advent invites us to pause and reflect on the hope that Christ brings into our lives - a hope that sustains us in times of uncertainty, encourages us to trust in God’s promises, and inspires us to look forward to the joy of His coming. In a world often filled with challenges, Advent calls us to be bearers of hope for one another, showing kindness, compassion, and love in our words and actions.
As we journey through this season, let us ask ourselves:
How can we be messengers of hope for those in our families, schools, and communities who need it most?
