Year 9 Speed Careers Event at Mary MacKillop College A Morning of Insights and Inspiration

On Thursday, 7 November 2024, the Middle School building at Mary MacKillop College came alive with energy and excitement as our Year 9 students participated in the Speed Careers Event, a unique opportunity to explore a variety of career pathways through face-to-face interactions with local mentors.

This event was organised by the South Gippsland and Bass Coast Local Learning and Employment Network (SGBCLLEN), which aims to connect students with the local workforce and provide valuable insights into potential career paths. A total of 18 mentors from diverse industries volunteered their time to meet with students, including representatives from TAFE Gippsland, South Gippsland Shire, AGA, Harris Build, Marinus Link, Ag Warehouse, Ambulance Victoria, Watersure, Victoria Police, West Vic Employment Services, Gippsland Southern Health Service and Saputo. Mentors pictured below.

Throughout the morning, students engaged in lively, two-way conversations with these professionals, asking questions and learning firsthand about the mentors’ careers and the skills required in various industries. The atmosphere was buzzing with enthusiasm as students interacted with passionate professionals, gaining a deeper understanding of the wide range of career opportunities available right here in the local area.

One of the highlights of the event was the informal nature of the conversations, which allowed students to ask questions and learn from mentors in a relaxed setting. The students left the event with new knowledge about various fields, and many expressed their appreciation for the chance to speak with experts in areas they had not previously considered. The day ended on a high note with a morning tea kindly supplied by SGBCLLEN, providing an opportunity for further casual networking.

Feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive, with many noting how much they enjoyed the chance to speak to mentors and gain a new perspective on different career paths. One student commented, "I had no idea about some of the jobs that are out there. It was great to talk to people who know so much about their careers."

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the mentors, the supervising teachers, and everyone involved in making this event a success. Special thanks go to Leah Underwood from SGBCLLEN for coordinating such a wonderful event.

Thanks again to the following: TAFE Gippsland, South Gippsland Shire, AGA, Harris Build, Marinus Link, Ag Warehouse, Ambulance Victoria, Watersure, Victoria Police, West Vic Employment Services, Gippsland Southern Health Service and Saputo.

This event was a key step in helping students explore their future career options, and we look forward to continuing to connect students with local industries and opportunities in the future.
