From the 5/6 Classrooms
This term seems to be flying by and we are excited to share what’s been happening in our classrooms this term!
Maths
This week in Maths, Grade 6 students kicked off an exciting project, The Food Truck Project! Students are using different aspects of the mathematics curriculum to plan their own food trucks, and we’ve already begun by exploring Queen Victoria Market.
We worked with a map of the market, calculating the area and perimeter of the different spaces within the market. After that, we dove into some real-world data, calculating the percentage of land used for different purposes and creating a pie graph to display our findings. Over the next few weeks, we will survey our classmates to discover which foods would be most popular at our food truck and use the results to help plan our meals and design our truck.
Meanwhile, the Grade 5 students have also been busy working on area and perimeter. They tackled a mini golf investigation, where they were asked to design a mini golf hole for a backyard. The challenge included creating a detailed diagram, working within a specific budget, and ensuring the design met certain requirements:
- The mini golf hole must cover between 5 and 7 square metres.
- At least 70% of the area must be surfaced with short grass.
- The shape must have more than four sides (no quadrilaterals!).
- It must include at least one novelty item and one flag hole.
- Students must stay within a budget of $600 for all materials from the catalogue provided by Gavin’s Golf Gear.
This has been a fun way to apply maths to real-world scenarios while working on problem-solving and financial planning!
Literacy
In Literacy, we have continued to explore the world of poetry. This week, we focused on two exciting forms: lyric poetry and free verse poetry.
Through lyric poetry, students have been looking at how poets use rhyme schemes, metre (the rhythm of the poem), and stanza length to create meaning and musicality in their writing. In free verse poetry, we’ve explored how poems can be written without any set structure, allowing the poet to express their thoughts more freely.
Students have been learning to identify and use literary techniques such as imagery, simile, and alliteration, which help bring their poems to life. We are looking forward to continuing to explore and create poetry in the coming weeks!
Camp
During Week 4 the Grade 6's attended Waratah Bay Beach Camp. Students participated in a number of exciting and challenging physical and adventure activities including surfing, beach games and activities, pool swim, bush walking, indoor games and a movie night. They also took part in a Wilson's Prom Day tour, where they experienced beautiful views and landscapes.
Maddie- My favourite memory from camp was staying up late talking and making jokes with my friends!
Sophia- My favourite memory was surfing because it was funny how everytime I caught a wave I just tumbled off!
Addie- My favourite memory from camp was the sunset walk along the beach. Everyone was having so much fun playing on the sand.
We thank the wonderful staff and parents who attended camp and made it a fantastic experience for all our students.
Until the next issue,
The Grade 5 & 6 Team
